Synthetic vs. petroleum base oil

Hi everyone,

I am currently running a Valvoline Semi-synthetic oil in my 2000 SS (that is what the original owner ran) and I am wondering if I should change to Mobil 1 or a regular petroleum based oil, or keep running the semi-synthetic? I have read on these forums about piston slap noises pro and con with the Mobil 1 and am a little concerned about that. Any suggestions?????

Thanks in advance,

Jason U

There's a lot of tests done which show that synthetic is the best oil to use but I've never seen any reports that actually suggest that it will extend the life of your car. I run Redline oil myself (10w30). Changing your oil and oil filter routinely is more important than the type of oil you use.

With mobil 1 your car will run smoother, faster, cooler, quieter, and more efficient. It will make your engine last longer, they ran a bmw 1 million miles and the engine was like new, no deposits and within tolerance. It is much less corrossive than anything else and it will flow at 40 below zero and it doesn't burn at 450 degrees like other oils. it will save you money, it also helps your filter last longer so that is not really a concern. If you get one of accels blue air filters it will keep the oil filter and oil cleaner too.

Well I run Conventional Oil in my car but if I were to run a synthetic, I would have to run Amsoil .. But to be honest, as long as you keep changing the oil every 3K miles if you are in town/city driving and a little bit of Freeway, then you should not have any problems with your car.. If you are driving more Freeway, then you can stretch conventional to 5 K max, but as a general rule that I go buy, is when the oil is really dirty I try to change the oil asap... I am religious about keeping up w/ regular maintanence..

My car has 16K(I bought it w/ 10K) miles on it, so tomorrow I am going to change the oil, rotate tires, replace air filter(untill I get FIPK)... I try to change my oil every 3,000 miles just because I want my engine to last.... If you want to run partial synthetic (Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, or even Valvoline Semi-Synthetic).. Then go ahead but from what I have read about oil and even know people who actually run Amsoil... That the only true Synthetic Oil is Amsoil.... But what makes me so reluctant is the fact that amsoil states that you need to change the oil and filter every 25K mile/ or once a year... and every 6 months change your filter... But the thing that gets me, even at this interval, what about the oil getting dirty from hydracarbons ?? That is what actually makes the oil dirty and why you usually change the oil because the hydracarbons and heat break down the oil..

So my question for anyone who is running amsoil that goes along w/ what Amsoil states, Does your oil Look dirty after 3K miles and above ???

Semi synthetic rocks, I use Quaker State semi synth, a wear scar test I saw showed it to be about .05% worse than Mobil 1 fully synthetic, and its less than half the price. Even Quaker State's flashpoint/ash content etc for dino oil is very good.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am going to consider all of your input this week and do the change next weekend - probably will switch to the Mobil 1 though.

Thanks again,

I use Mobil 1 and haven't had any problems for 69K, but I haven't been very hard on my car. Besides Mobil 1 is what comes in the Corvette from the factory.
