Sudden Power Burst @ WOT

Hey,

Kind of a strange question, but here goes: When I go WOT and the engine is up at 4+ RPM, if I hit a bump in the road I will get a sudden burst of power right after the bump (you can feel a vast increase in torque). What is causing that? I do not believe it is a traction issue because I do not hear the tires spin or feel the car sliding.

Here is a theory that I don't have much faith in: Is it possible that the back pressure that builds up in the SLP Loudmouth Resonator is all released at once due to the bump?

Does anyone else experience this? Do you know the cause? Is it simply traction?

2 theories

1ST- its in your imagination, see a shrink

2nd- as the engine is creeping up in rpms and power, hitting the bump causes a quick temporary weight reduction allowing rpms to jump up quicker in that tenth-3 tenths of a second. would have to be a decent bump to allow that though. shock of impact may be affecting converter lockup too if an a4.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Backpressure release....kind of like an automotive power flatulence? As Larry the Cable Guy would say, "Thats funny, I don't care who you are."

Just because you don't hear your tires break loose doesn't mean they aren't. When you go over a bump, your tires lose traction (are actually probably coming off the ground for a split second) and start spinning faster due to less/no restriction. When you land, your feeling the little added RPM momentum from that. Watch your speedo and tach or listen to your engine and I'll bet thats whats going on.

Exactly. It's a traction issue and that burst you feel is when your tires grab.

Yah, like I said... not much faith in the back pressure theory. I think the tires leaving the ground and spinning faster seems logical. The car is an m6. Thanks for the replies!

I'd have to go with the backpressure release theory.

What??

Naw, more likely you have a limited edition with a flux capacitor and you are jumping forward in time for a split second.

Easy on those speed bumps dude. despite the name, you arn't supposed to speed up when you cross them.

Nah, that's what happens when your blinker fluid gets low. The bump causes what little amount of fluild that's remaining in your muffler bearings to slosh around causing excessive air bubbles... which in turn would explain your 2nd theory of your resonator releasing an unusually large amount of backpressure aka thrust.

Check your resevoir, it's located behind the drivers side rear taillight.

My suggestion...find a smoother road. Running over/through bumps in the road while racing is an invitation for loss of control and possibly an accident.

Imagine a drag srtip having potholes along the 1/4 mile.

Oddly enough, there IS a race track out here in missouri that was like that. It was in the boonies though and didn't get as much use as the professional track out here. It's since been shut down.
