SS vs Z28
SS vs Z28
Is the SS package worth it? The biggest thing i would be thinking is "does the SS handle better than the Z28?" What are teh otehr differences between teh packages? Thanks for answering all these questions sometimes i go a little over board especially since it has to do with cars.
Re: SS vs Z28
SS had the appearance package i.e. hood, spoiler, wheels. They also were "limited" production and had suspension options i.e. different shock options so on so forth. The hood is "functional" somewhat but not nearly as well as the ws6 hood, also the 17in wheels are very nice to have since you can go with wider rubber, traction in my opinion is your best ally seeing as how it doesn't matter how much power you make if it doesnt hook. As far as the "free-er flowing" exhaust that 99% of the time gets replaced with a catback so its really up to you hope that helps some
Re: SS vs Z28
Do teh shock options help? I really liek to take corners fast but is this something taht i should worry about or is there an aftermarket shcok taht i cna put in that would be better?
Re: SS vs Z28
There are always better aftermarket setups thats why there aftermarket, the stock setup is decent for all around the bilstein hd shocks are quite nice but from what i understand not all ss came with them if you want insane handling the best way to start is with great rubber imo. I have a 99 trans am that had 16 in wheels with 245 all four corners after switching to a set of factory z06 wheels i have 265 up from and 295 in the rear.... the car holds the road nicely but has definite body roll. the reason i say all this is id get sway bars, lca's panhard rod, subframes, stb and springs and shocks should handle quite well theres all kinds of vendors to contact theyll be able to help you out more than me. IMO i think the ss looks better but looks aren't everything
Re: SS vs Z28
IMO an SS is not worth the extra money unless you like the hood/wing. They are more or less the same car - you can always get a Z cheaper and buy aftermarket suspension stuff that'll be better than what either car came with.

Short answer: Yes.
Long Answer: No.
The SS does outhandle the Z28, but if you bought a Z28 you could do some sick suspension upgrades with the saved cash, which would easily surpass the SS.
SS
-"Ram Air" hood (not technically named that on the maro)
-"Ram Air" induction (not really that helpful but looks sexy)
-Upgraded bushings, shocks and other misc suspension gear.
-Vin = SS which is what alot buy it for.
-17in ZR1 rims (which look hot on F4's imho.)
-SS Badging
-1996 Model only: Center counsel plaque with number build.
-"Less restrictive" Exhaust system.
-2002 SS: Upgraded Model, the best of the SS's IMHO.
-SLP build sticker in door, and other places i beleive.
IMHO, if you want a SS they are worth it strictly because it is A SS. If your looking for a road machine, the obvious choice (Again IMHO) is the Z/28, just because its a blank slate to make it whatever you wish it to be.
Re: SS vs Z28

Re: SS vs Z28
short answer on "is it worth it"
performance wise, no.
suspension wise, maybe
image wise, definitely
That's how they were sold. The SS always got the publicity, the Z28 was always playing second string. Z's the thinking man's camaro.
It still kind of annoys me when people think a stock SS can smoke a stock Z28. maybe by half a car, but give credit where credit is due. it's just got a couple of boltons.

Re: SS vs Z28
Here is a thread about the suspension differences and how big it really is.
Also fatter tires, better exhaust, 17" rims (they offer different styles), and of course the hood and spoiler. Those are the standard differences. Then there are many additional SS options. The car also holds that additional cost pretty well, but get what you can afford.
