SS Stock Exhaust

I am getting ready to buy a cat back system, however, my local muffler guy says the 02 SS (with stock SS exhaust...no SLP) has 3" pipes from the flange back. Do any if you technical guys know FOR SURE what size the stock pipes are? If they are 3", is there any reason to do a cat back, instead of a real nice muffler and some cool tips??? Please help...I was planning on doing this is the next two days.
Thanks

The stock SS pipe is 3", however I believe the "Y" pipe is still the flattend out POS, you might want to replace it with a 3" round pipe.

-re: (with stock SS exhaust...no SLP) " -SLP makes that stock exhaust. It does have a 3" pipe from the flange back. Even the z28's have a 3" pipe back. The stock SS muffler has 2.5" tips out, so you'd probably just want a bigger output from your muffler. Get something with 3" out on both sides. The cat backs usually have smoother bends allowing for a slight increase in exhaust flow.

Lan01z;

I respectfully disagree with your statement, stock Z28's have a 2 3/4" pipe going from flanges to muffler (y pipe is smaller), 2.5" out to tips.

Well, i'm confused then. I had my muffler shop try and install my friends ws6 muffler on my car. The muffler guy said that the inlet for the muffler was the same size and they even took a tape measure to it. Isn't that a 3"? Since the muffler was cut off so close, they couldn't weld it on the pipe. They told me that there wouldn't be any performance difference between the two anyway, so I bought a dynomax with 3" just because I couldnt put any other tips on the stock z28 muffler due to the lopsided off-center design So the stock ws6 and ss have a 2 and 3/4 pipe?

So, basically the answer to this guys question would be to get a 3" cat-back. Since the stock ss is really 2 and 3/4.

OK, so now i have two guys giving two diferent answers (to which they have finaly agreed that the stock pipes are 2 3/4"). Can anyone else with expierience ring in on what the stock sized pipes are in an 02 SS, not a Z28 (not that I doubt you, Lan01z or transam8, I just want to be absolutly sure before I make a $300 - $600 mistake).
Thanks again

More than likely you have the 3". I'd say your safest bet would be to call SLP and give them your vin number. They will be able to tell you right away what size inlet your muffler has. I've looked on their site and they sell both the replacement mufflers with 2 1/4 and a 3" replacement.

One thing I think is kind of odd is, the replacement y-pipe from slp features a 2 1/2" pipe.

http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...RTNUMBER=31035

Now wouldn't that be the bottleneck right there? Going from a 2 1/2 to 3", you really don't gain anything since you're restricted down to 2 1/2 at the y-pipe.

All factory exhaust I pipes are 2 3/4" regardless of what car they come on (Z, SS, Formula, T/A, and WS6.)Only the Firehawk comes with a standard 3" system (SLP Dual Dual) which is optional on the SS.

9T8W66 is right on the money, I had my entire exhaust replaced on my 2001 Z28, from the rear 02 sensors back with 3" mandrel bent aluminized piping (I live in a warm dry climate) including the Y pipe, going into a Dynomax "Super Turbo muffler", with 2 3/4" pipe going to 2 "Megs" oval exhaust tips.

It is a little louder than the stock system, and it flows very well.

Thumbs up

Lan01z;

Good choice in mufflers, very high flowing, yet quiet enough to keep the local police off your tail.

An exhaust system does not have to be loud to be high flow and efficient (sp).
