SS Axle

I've got an LT1 right now and was thinking about upgrading to an LS1 SS. One of my concerns on my car right now is how much the axle can handle. Everyone in the LT1 forum has been telling me that the SSs have the same axle. However, today, on Speed Channel, I saw that SLP puts in a better axle on the SSs. What's up with that? Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks,
Alex

'93-'02 uses the same rear axle assembly, it is even similar (though narrower than) to a 3rd gen. The only thing SLP does with the rear axle is either upgrade the posi unit from Torsen to Auburn and/or include an AAM differential cover. These are options to the SSes, and not all of them have it. Mine does not, for example.

Argh, I really want to build an ultimate street F-bodyas efficiently financial-wise as possible. I'm not sure what I'm looking for just yet but something between mid 10s to low 11s with exceptional handling -- sounds more like something to ask out of a C5, but I figured the F-bodies would be cheaper.

Too many hooked up cobras, vettes, and vipers have been running around here lately and I need to shut them up -- ya dig?

You'll probably be looking at a 12-bolt conversion then, but a heavier live axle isn't going to help getting handling dynamics like the Corvette.
Maybe a used Vette would be a better starting point - there are some good deals now. I almost bought a 2000 coupe for $30k late last year, 15k miles, but ended up getting the SS convertible for less!

By the way, I'm 17 but have a pretty good job.

I've seen 99-00s C5s go for 23-25k around here in mint condition and below-average miles. I bet I could find one at a dealer car auction cheaper -- anyone go to them and remember what they go for? I've seen a bunch of them but can't remember -- hardest thing would be to find a 6-speed. What would I need to do to the C5? Any suspension work? I love my handling to be rediculously stiff.
