So my '01 has 274 HP.....

I dyno'ed my '01 today.

274 HP (pic on bottom) 297 or so TQ.

Yea, I think something is wrong!

Car has some minor piston slap at startup, but nothing bad. My AF ratio is around 13 or so, so I hink that it robbing me of about 10 or so HP/TQ but not that bad.

Any ideas as of WTF is holding me from about 30 HP?!?!?!

Oh yea, car is an '01 with about 12K on the clock, so I don't think plugs/wires are an issue. There isn't a misfire or anything, as it runs pretty well. It's all stock, down to the paper filter (well, I have weld in SFCs)

WTF!!!

That definitely doesn't seem right. My car put down 317/330 with a lid, headers, and catback and I thought it was on the low side.

Have you been running 91+ octane?

That is low...esp for an '01. Could be the type of dyno you used. On a dynojet I spun 311/327 w/ a '98 T/A with free mods and borla.

I am well aware of the fact that it is low....I am asking what would make it that low.....I think I was running 91 octane at the time.

My car is consuming a ton of oil (1 1/4 qt per 1000 miles) and I can't fin dthat out either.....

I only dynoed 278 bone stock ... not everyone gets a mythical dyno queen.

A couple of mods woke it up ... FIPK and a cutout and I was at 311 rwhp ...

Keep an eye on the oil consumption, though. I did wash out a ring at 28,000 mile due to a locked up fuel injector ... the car was runnning low 12s by that time .. even ran a 12.5 on 7 cylinders blowing smoke all the way down the track ...

What type of Dyno did you use? The Mustang Dyno tends to give you approximately 10% lower number than the Dynojet.

Also, if you are going through 1.25 quarts of oil per 1000 miles it sounds like you have bad rings or valves. You might want to have that checked out. If you do you might be loosing compression.

Good luck,

Al

i dynoed low for my mods but i trapped at 110 and consistent 109s which is right for what my setup is.run it at the track.dyno #s dont mean much.

your oil consumption is another story.theres a chance itll slow down with mileage.

I'd check all the obvious first. Plug gap, inspect wires, check for vacuum leaks.. Are you throwing a code? Maybe its a sensor (o2, etc). If you dyno'd on a mustang dyno, 274hp is still nothing great.. but at least it would be at least semi-acceptable.

If you give up finding stuff there, I'd do a compression test also. Sounds like one or more of your cylinders is getting some blow by in order to be burning that much oil. If this is the case, you'll have to drive the beast around until you can afford to repair it. And if its the valves, you can always just buy some stage II heads If its the rings, go ahead and pop a cam in the shortblock while you got it toredown. Maybe even do an overbore and get some forged pistons and do ARP rodbolts.. Take advantage of the situation. Whatever it may be, Good Luck!!

Merry Christmas,

Don't feel bad, my numbers were 291RWHP/355RWTQ for my 2001 Z28, with lid, catback & 3.73's, on a dyno jet. I am planning a dyno tune after a TC swap.

Cute girl

OK Lets try to reply to everything:

How do I check for vacuum leaks? How do I do a compression test?

It was on a dynoje (New England Dyno, for all you MA guys...)

Shouldn't I have expected to see around 310? I mean, the engine has 350 HP at the crank, so my DT loss is around 20 percent?

Also, doesn't my TQ seem a little high for my HP? I would think with 274 HP, the TQ shoudl be around 285 or so, not 297 (or whatever it hit)

Keep the ideas coming!

Compression test can be done with a compression guage. It threads into your spark plug hole, and when you turn the motor over you record the numbers on each cylinder. If one of the numbers is low.. that cylinder is leaking at either the valve or the ring. You can rent a compression guage from autozone.

Vacuum leak is likely not the problem for a missing 30hp However, I had one on my car due to the ghetto EGR blockoff I made. The car overall had poor running quality.. took longer to return to idle, and you could actually feel the difference. Just a few things to check for.

Peace,

Realistically ... No. I've seen more '01s dyno under 300 than have seen dyno over 300. But you do see more '01s and '02 that dyno over 300 than you do other years ... But that doesn't mean everyone does and it is more likely that you won't ...

And don't trust what you see on the internet ... people who get big numbers brag it up ... people who don't tend to not say anything ... and then there's are the people who will fudge to get big numbers ...

I don't know where you got the 350 ... the Z is rated at 310 at the crank from the fcatory ... Assuming 20% loss your 274 would be at 342 anyway and above the factory rating ...

Your TQ is fine for the numbers ...

Chase your oil consumption issue ... and even that may or may not be a HP an issue ... some of these cars just eat oil ...

Good Luck

Any ideas as of what could cause that?

Its been proven many times over that GM underrated these motors. They said that there was 310 at the crank but we all know that is wrong. This is the exact same motor that is in the vette. The vette was rated at 350 at the crank.

What should my compression be?

So to do the test, I unscrew a plug, screw in the compression gauge, and start up my car?
