I drive a 2002 SS. Is this a 'stock' lid, or an SLP lid? I dont see SLP mentioned anywhere on it.

I've heard this lid sucks. Opinions?
Is it worth me getting a 'better' lid, for better performance and fuel economy? Which would you recommend if so? Or is this lid just fine?

Yes, absolutely - does it say blackwing on it in the lower right hand corner?

I believe this was part of their 345HP package Y2Y options on the car.

I dont see any mentioning of "Blackwing" anywhere on the thing. Is that how you know if it is an SLP or not?

Any other opinions on how I can tell the difference for sure?

That is definitely NOT an SLP lid, nor part of any 345 hp package. That's the GM lid with the air silencers in place on a 2001-2 Camaro (judging by the lack of an EGR.

That is a GM stock lid and not the optional one.

That's the regualr POS intake.. it's the same one that came on my 01z.. go.. right now.. and buy a new air box lid! GO! My god.. you can feel the horse power that new lid will give you. You'll never again get such a power boost for under 200 bux.. NOW.. GO BUY ONE!

Get a K&N filter too.. make SURE you get the little foam gasket that sticks to the lid, k&n should give it to you with the filter, if they don't, don't use the new lid and call K&N. they'll send you the gasket.

Camaro ChriSS & 01Z, are right on the money, it is the stock POS lid with the air baffels in the back, it was also on my 2001 Z28 from the factory.

and I would suggest a Holley Powershot instead of the K&N as it fits perfectly from what I am told while the K&N requires that foam piece.

I personally will be getting a Whisper Motorsports Lid..

psychocabbage;

I have a post 2000 vehicle too, consider getting the SLP airlid instead, it is the only one I know of that has the air pump hose connection to the airbox, it really makes the lid look like a stock setup, and the graining of the plastic blends in perfect with the rest of the airbox.

I have the Holly powershot airfilter, and it fits like a glove (no VW's for me ).

SteveC, the main reason I wont get the SLP box is becuase of the fitment issues some people have. I read about it on their website when a user posted his issues. He went to SLP in person and showed them his airbox and they told him that it was because some are made better than others. They didnt replace it or anything. I personally feel that he was not treated properly. I double checked this at the SLP Customer Appreciation Day in Ennis TX. There I looked at every lid possible. Many of the SLP lids did show the same issue as was described and pictured in the post (The front of the lid was not flush and the right and left edges were kind of bending upwards). I witnessed at least 4 of the SLP lids at the car show there with this. MTI lids fit perfectly as did the LS1 Motorsport lids. I am wanting the Whisper lid because I am going to be getting a blackleather and carbon fiber MOMO shift **** and I want the lid to be of the carbon fiber look as well. I like the idea of stock looking but I dont want the **** to be the only bit of carbon fiber look in the car so the lid will tie the two together... Also, I use a Quake 3 etched glass look sticker on my car and I am thinking that on the smooth surface of the carbonfiber look lid, it would stick better if I put one underhood.

Why would they make this stock lid suck so much, the one that I currently have in the picture (my origional post)?

Why not spend an extra 10 cents and make it decent, like these aftermarket ones?

What is the least expensive lid I could use to replace this one, that I'll notice a good performance gain and have no issues fitting on my 2002?

Thanks!

Everyone has an off day now and then Chris...

Get the Direct-flo unit from LS1 Motorsports. Watch for a GP on it or get one used in the classifieds. There is often one for sale (check LS1.com too).

The stock one is designed as it is to reduce noise (for federal drive by noise control and for wimpy drivers) at the expensive of airflow. It's likely also done to specifically give the Vette a better edge.

psychocabbage;

Sounds like you did alot of homework on this, I must have been lucky, my SLP lid seated properly upon installation.

Either way, you will not go wrong with the MTI product.

It sounds like you have a great car in the making.
