A simple question for all LS1 owners

I am used to the LT1 power band so please don't think I am dumb for asking.

Is it just my car or do all LS1's have a super wussy low end? For example cruising in second at like 15mph I mash the gas and get no real go power until 3,000rpm.

It always seems like I can drop another gear and take of like a bat out of hell though.

I've noticed the same thing. Seems sluggish when just slamming the gas at low rpms in a certain gear... but if you downshift the car immediately screams. In a far off way it almost reminds me of the Talon below 3K before the turbo would hit full boost; totally gutless, then bam it smacks you right in the face.

It's a butt-o-meter thing ... The LT1 one has more torque than rwhp ... so you're use to that strong pull at the low end vs what happens on the top.

The LS1 actaully has about the same, maybe slightly more torque at the bottom end, than an LT1. But the LS1 has dramatically more rwhp on top.

So what you're feeling is the same pull as before, it's just that compared to the top it seems weak realtive to what you had before ...

i dunno for me i think its a little of both...i owned a 94 with just an slp intake that ran 13.7@100 and i could overpower the 245's that were on it from teh get go but it had 3.23 gears....with this car i cant spin the tires for the life of me with the 2.73 gears but once it gets going its gone to the tune of 13.4@105 on 235's all around and thats with a lid, and a catback so obvioiusly its making up for the lack of low end with some top end hp...my 60's were about the same in both cars...in the 94 id get anywhere from 1.99-2.10 on the street tires...with this car i had two 2.06's and a 2.10 same track...i think the ls1's do lack a minimal amount of bottom end...but who cares they pull so hard the rest of the way it more than makes up for it.

Yo

How do you make it so you can add the torque? To sorta get the feel of the LT1 in the LS1?

with an auto car you could add a converter this would get you into the powerband a lot faster and give you the feeling of more tq once you get on it. Gears are another thing...it will run you through the gears faster...a blower or turbo especially a turbo will give you tons of low end tq. Umm ive run out of ways to give you a seat of the pants feel for tq...anyone else?

I got the car dyno's the other day with a max 340 torque with mods below. It has over 300 ftlbs after 2200 rpm on up. So it has the low end, your *** just doesnt feel it.

For M6s, u must change rear end gears, but that decreases gas milage. But if "HOLY CHRIST DUDE SLOW DOWN" is what you want, get the 4.10 gears and stay in first or second when you're showing off. Thats what I do, when I show off, I start in sencond and throw then back and then just shift hard and fast so they hear the tires chirping all the way to 90MPH

Yeah man, this is totally normal with the LS1. Any punch under 3 grand while cruising around feels weak(no matter what gear your in). And even over that, it still doesn't push me back into the seats like a SBC making that much power should.

Part of this is that I've got really used to my car's power level and the other part is that the LS1 just has a very, very smooth powerband with a real broad torque curve. It's power delivery is different than that of the LT1 and doesn't peak until much higher up. Like that other guy said, once the LS1 gets into its powerband, it just keeps on pulling and pulling. Very deceiving...

Keep in mind, my car is a basically stock 6-speed with just a lid & cat-back. Some 4.10 gears really help the M6 with this problem though.

My LT1 was WAY stronger under 3000 than the LS1 when they were stock. Once all the stuff was done to them, though, they were about the same in that RPM range.

couldnt beleive some of the answers on here. Its a power band issue. Go race a lt1 from a 60mph roll and its a day and night diffrence race him from around 25 mph and yours till gonna beat the living crap out of him. The reason being they are 2 completly diffrent engines with diffrent cams thus making diffrent power bands. a LS1 doesnt see real power till about 2000-5000 while a lt1 is more 1400-4400. That lt1 may pull at the start but once you get in those higher rmps your gonna get it all back and some.

This is one of the reasons I like the a4. If i'm going 15-20 mph and mash the throttle, it downshifts very quickly and takes off like a bat out a hell. Also fells strong if I give 1/2 to full throttle from a dead stop. I think its got pretty decent low end. Now if I'm going 35-40 mph and floor it, it'll only downshift into 2nd and thats when it feels a bit sluggish, but soon after picks up nicely. Anything 30mph or below and 45mph and above feels great when I nail it.

in an a4 only race from 25mph ( down shifts into first right at peak power and you will feel this the most ) 60 mph ( down shifts 2nd at a really good peak power you can feel alot of power from here and up till about 135. In an a4 there isnt any power anywhere else. My 95 z28 had 2.73s so from these rolls it felt about the same because 2.73s can kill alot of things from a nascar roll.

I love my 3.73's, when I'm show'in off I'll criuse just under 20 mph and slam the gas down and when it shifts into 1st all hell breaks loose. I can't wait to get a Tq converter.
