A muffler in the I-pipe should help, or cats will cure the problem.

Re: SICK of loudmouth with headers....HELP!!!

Dont get me wrong... It sounds MEAN under WOT, But it makes it sound crappy under throttle, if your just lugging around. Kind of makes a "fart" like sound when it changes 1-2 gear. Backfires alot when you let off the throttle from a high RPM....Anyone know if the sweet thunder muffler should quieten it down alittle?? I still want it to be loud when Im dead into it, but just not when Im cruising.... Thanks!

Check out the Borla XR-1 muffler or the Dynomax bullet muffler in place of the resonator.

Question for you...how much louder is your setup over just the LM exhaust?

Re: SICK of loudmouth with headers....HELP!!!

I would just say that from my expierience that the loudmouth is GREAT for a car with converters and stock manifolds. With the longtubes and ORY it is obnoxious. I gotta get me some o2 sims also, I have a service light and I even had my rear o2's welded into the ORY...Still throws the codes....But yes it sounded better before the header install with the LM....LOUDER and a lot of resonance now ....But I picked up 7 tenths and 4 mph at our local 1/8 with the mods in sig over stock. Performs ALOT better after!! Im favoring a chambered muffler, just havnt decided which one yet.

I would leave the LM resonator on and put a sweet thunder in after it. It would probably sound bad ***. Would probably get rid of A LOT of the drone and raspiness. Call it a thundermouth...Not many have done it...you would have a unique exhaust and a sweet sounding car.

Good Idea .... But I bet Id have to go ahead of the resonator...But that should still work shouldnt it??? Theres just not much room before the after the resonator before it Y's at the tailpipes.... That would sound SICK though I bet!

Re: SICK of loudmouth with headers....HELP!!!

Being around and hearing hundreds of LS1's over the last four years with all types of different aftermarket set-ups (including the LM on anywhere from stock to heavily modified vehicles), here's what I honestly think:

That set-up (or with a wide-open Borla) sounds downright disgusting IMO. If you truly want it to actually sound better , you're going to at least need to put some highflow cats on the Y-pipe. They will kill the mid-range rasp/popping you talk about and clean up the sound some. I still don't like the Loudmouth with any header set-up regardless and think it sounds best behind stock manifolds and cats. But just putting a Dynomax Bullet or Sweet Thunder Chambered muffler in place of the resonator isn't going to do much. It will help a little, but trust me, there will still be that nasty rasp/drone. Although several guys on www.LS1tech.com now swear by the Borla XR1 oval muffler that they claim does a much better job than the bullet/chambered ones. Do a search over there on that muffler and you'll see (there might even be some sound clips of it on a LM car over at www.ls1sounds.com).

My honest opinion though is to either put some highflow cats on your existing set-up if you still want the car to be generally loud or ditch the LM all together for another, yet cheap cat-back like the Hooker, SLP 2OTL, SLP Dual/Dual or Magnaflow and still put some cats on your Y which will all sound a lot better than straight pipes (LM).

No matter what, you'll get that nasty rasp without cats through a "single" exhaust set-up, but it just sounds a lot worse through the Loudcrap as compared to not sounding too bad at all out a Hooker or SLP Dual/Dual. With cats, the tone is definitely much cleaner, deeper, and more refined...

Good luck,

Mike

Do NOT use a DynoMax bullet! That's what I replaced my LM resonator with and it still sounds like crap. I have a Borla XR-1 shipping to me right now, so I'll be sure to post up on how it sounds...

Cats would certainly help. Offroad pipes are terrible if you're driving your car every day. I only drive mine on the weekends, and only in the spring/summer, so it's not unbearable for the few hours I drive it, in fact, like they say "distance makes the heart grow fonder."
