Should I buy this car???
Should I buy this car???
I found 2002 Z-28 with 13,000 miles fully loaded, AT. Price is $17,000. Here is my dilemma it only has the GU2 code and I was kind of looking for the GU5 performance axle. Is this option a huge deal. This car is real clean. What is the difference in 1/4 mile times between the two. Should I hold out, or try to make a deal on this car. Will a Z-28 with the GU2 still run in the 13's stock. Any help greatly appreciated I am desperatly trying to get into a Z-28 but I dont want to let my eagerness overwhelm me into a stupid decision.
With either gear the car will still run 13s all day. The 3.23 geared car will be faster but it's not a big deal. You can buy complete 3.23 geared used rearends for $200 to $400 and just swap them out. The steel driveshaft isn't a bad thing until you start turning very high rpms. Your speed limiter will be set way low but just locate a shop that does LS1 Edit tuning and they can set your speed limiter where ever you want it and reset the speedometer to work with the 3.23 gears if you should change them. My own opinion is that if the gearing is the only problem then I would go ahead and buy the car. It sounds like a good buy to me.
When I had my 95 Z A buddy of mine had one too. The only difference was I had leather, tops, and 2.73's ad he had 3.23's (they were even both green!) They had similar mods and his was consistently less than 1/10th faster in the qrtr than mine.
Being that LS1's like to rev a bit more than the LT1, the difference may be a bit more on an LS1 car though.
If I was in the market for an automatic it was in immaculate condition, low miles and at a great price, it wouldn't matter to me either way what gears it had. I'd jump on the 2.73 car just as well as a 3.23 car.
I don't think it really matters on the street or an "occasional" qtr mile car;
But..........................
If you're looking to squeeze ever bit out of it at the track or you just have a ng feeling that you should get 3.23's, then maybe you should hold out.

personally, i wouldn't decide to buy a car or not based on an option that i could change myself for such a low cost. that's why i always laugh at the car commercials that focus on what a great stereo the car comes with. :blah:
Thats a heck of a price. Keep the 2.73s and just get a bigger stall than you would with the 3.23. You will still have the same acceleration but you will also have better gas mileage when cruising on the interstate when the converter locks. Go with a 3400+3600 converter. People have run 11s with a 2.73 and it makes for a stronger rear for launching hard.

Personally I have never seen a drastic difference between the 2 and believe me I have raced my fair share of 3.23's.If i was looking for a Z28, difiently I would want a 2.73 GU2. It may not be oustanding in 1st gear, but it pulls hard as hell in 2nd and 3rd, and you will leave no mercy for those clowns with 3.73's on the expressway. Thats for sure. I would buy it without a doubt. You put a stall converter in that..wow!

Top speed was limited to 118 or so if you had the cheesey non Z rated tires with the car.. Otherwise you got the 155 speed limit..
