Shorties, Mid lenghts, or Long Tubes
IMO, you won't see much gain at all from shorty headers. Mid-lengths might get you ~10 rwhp, but LT's are the ultimate way to go if you want the most performance. Even on stock engines, guys have seen up to 30 rwhp gains!
On nitrous, I'm not sure what type of difference you'd see, but it would all be in proportion to the N/A horsepower. A shorty header is almost a waste of time though
........hell, the factory manifolds almost resemble a "shorty" header?!
Sorry I don't have first-hand info for you, but that's a start anyway!

The Maniflds may resemble a halfass header from the top.... But thse small tubes flow into a single narrow chamber.... With shorties, there are 4 tubes that goes into the Ypipe directly.... I think it would be a pretty huge gain over manifolds. Im getting all this for $300.
Hooker Shorties, two Sims to remove the cats and a Ypipe. Installled... Should i do that?

Those of us in emissions and inspection land usually can't deal with longtubes.
However, I'd at least make an effort to get mids. I'm not sure how legal they are, though. I should do some research on that, I doubt I could get away with longtubes here in CT, but I may be able to push mids, and it'd help out my car a lot.

shorties are a waste of money
the only option for midlengths are MAC's and they aren't that bad...ive seen 20rwhp/20ft-lbs untuned after macs/oryp
longtubes are usually more expensive but they are also considered "better" as far as performance gains/sound

You have a 98, which have the worst exhaust manifolds of the LS1. Usually 00+ cars see no gains from shorties (as their manifolds flow better), but 98-99 cars get some gain. Not much though. Less than 10.
Only bother with mid lengths if you get them so a steal - ie. some used MACs for like $200 with y-pipe.
Otherwise, go the LT route. Best long run option and biggest gain. Also, prices are getting good, with Pacesetters coming in at $240.

Hey, check out the September 2003 Edition of HIgh Performance Pontiac Magazin. They have a list of the 10 best LS1 Mods. Number 7 is long tube headers. They asked some people from SLP, the owner of Detroit Speedworks, and the owner of Pittsburghs Speed Shop, and they all agree that "shorty headers are worthless on an F-Car ( p 45)." Sorry man, but I wouldn't get the shorty ones after reading htat.
