Question shopping for y-pipe and cats

hello, my father has a 2001 camaro ss. He also has the slp package... It is just your standerad stock get around automatic camaro. He needs his cats replaced and he is looking to do it the cheapest way possible. I of course want him to get a full y-pipe with high flow cats but im not sure if that is in his price range. Also, after the cat there is a small dent in the exhaust so this darn y-pipe needs to go. Do you think it is possible to get a decent y-pipe and 2 good cats without breaking the bank? I know more about lt1 parts prices and deals more than i do ls1's. SO, I need to do this as cheap as possible or my dad is going to spring for a brand new ford f-150 instead *gasp* this car has 107,000 mi on it and it runs STRONG. he drives like a granny and this intermentint SEs light from the post cat sensors is going to keep him from getting it smogged. Thanks alot,
Tony

Re: shopping for y-pipe and cats

Just replace the cats ... y pipe replacement on an LS1 is only good for weight reduction, as in lightening your wallet. The "dent" is a crush pipe and has the same flow area as the rest of y-pipe.

Re: shopping for y-pipe and cats

first, why does the cat need to be replaced. fed warranty on cats is 8 years and 80k miles. If it is a defect, it is covered. The dent you are speaking of is probably a factory dent that all of our cars have. If your dad plans on putting on long tubes or modifying the exhaust and needs new cats, now might be the time.

govt into on the cats warranty.

Question Re: shopping for y-pipe and cats

It is not a defect. It is simply just not cutting out enough of the bad stuff. I forgot the code but its the Post Catalytic converter inefficiency one. And yes upon furthur inspection it is a manufactured flat spot that i saw. So i have seemed to have found a stopping point unless someone else finds something. Cant seem to find a direct replacement catylytic convertor for stock except the dealer which charges $482.86 per Cat and i think we all know that is not a viable option. Would prefer a full exhaust to uncomplicate things but my dad is rich and stubborn and would rather spend his money on hard wood floors.
Thanks for what ever you find

I'll sell you the 2 off of my car for $400 plus shipping. They have less than 20,000 miles on them.
PM me if interested.

Go on ebay and get some carsound(magnaflow) cats, probably 2 1/2". They are only like $50 each and get them welded in at an exhaust shop.

Thats covered under the 8 yr 80k mile warranty also.

In CA it would be illegal to relocate the cats and there are no aftermarket cats that'll fit in the stock location that I know of. Look for some stock take offs. Post a WTB thread. I'm sure there are guys in non-environazi states that'll sell them cheap.

The flat spot in the stock Y doesn't hurt performance. It has the same crossectional area as the other side. Its just flat for clearance like what you'd see in NASCAR.

You're the second guy to not read the origional post. Plague was the other guy.

If you're going to post suggestions at least read the post.

He said that it has 107,000 miles on it. No warrantees apply.

Try ebay for some used take offs, there is usually some on there with low prices or try ls1tech.com in the parts for sale section and don't forget the classified section on this board as well.

Re: shopping for y-pipe and cats

Thanks alot for the suggestions for Ebay, I may do that. One last and final question: Those magnaflow cats that you speak of, the only ones i could find that were the ~$50 ,$60 range were for V6's. None supplied threw E-bay for a V-8. Will these filter enough of the gasses because my car is a v8 and not a v6? I understand they are not direct replacement, so consideration in what this v6 catylytic convertor can filter for my hearty v8 motor should come in to factor, I think. AND by the way, this car is in texas, so not quite as strict on the gasses but pretty stinking close. I guess it all depeds on how much this catylytic convertor can filter... Any thoughts?
-Tony

-Maybe a single v6 cat doubled up would be good enough in this case?

Since you want to be all technical. I did not say it was under warranty but that is covered under the warranty. Not to mention the info about cat relocation was VERY pertinent to the thread.

$400 for 2 used cats is over priced. I GAVE mine away.

This is also not an LS1 ENGINE related thread and should be in the exhaust or "Parts FOR SALE or WTB section."

Re: shopping for y-pipe and cats

You were answered. You live in CA so you have to run stock cats because NO aftermarket cats fit in the stock location and your state is millitant about moving them.

Look on ebay. I just saw some cats going for under $90. Could also post in the WTB section or try the TX section. People here are running ORY's and just trash good stock cats. Offer $40 and shipping and I'm sure you'll get a bite.

The only reason to buy an aftermarket Y is because it fits headers. The SLP replacement Y and the likes will not give you any gains over the stocker so whats the point?
