Yes Trans-Go is a brand name. You can find it at many of the sponsors of this board. Look under transmissions. Cost is about $110 for the part.

The shift kit is exclusive to the A4. It changes the line pressure and make the car shift quicker and firmer. It doesn't change shift points, however, as that is controlled by the computer.

An A4 tranny is better for drag racing and stright line driving. Installing a shift kit helps gain that extra "oomph" and it just feels good to have a little kick in the butt when the car shifts.

It makes the car shift fast/harder.

How about a HPP (hypertech power programmer)? Thats what I use. They are $320 new, or around $150 used. You can adjust the shift firmness, and shift points with it. The best thing is that you don't have to do any tranny work, just plug it in.

Most people don't advise going over 25-50% on the firmness though.

If you do intend on getting a shift kit you will need a hypertech or custom programming for the computer so your tranny doesn't get damaged. In the long run I think buying a HP tranny (with a shift kit already installed) is the best way to go and will last longer.

Z-Fbody so you are saying I could get the exact same result from a HPP as I can get from a shift kit?? If that is true then why would anyone need a shift kit, (besides to save money), and you already said a "used " HPP is about the same price as a new shift kit...

The only main differenace is that with Trans-Go kit, you are putting the parts in, so the transmisson has no choice but to shift how you want it. You also install the correct parts so there isn't any extra wear and tear.

With a HPP, you "trick" the computer into thinking the Transmission needs more pressure. That is why most people say don't go over 50% firmess, as you could damage the tranny. There arn't parts arn't there....just more line prressue. There hasn't been any "proof" that it damages the tranny, but everyone is following the "better safe then sorry" line. You should contact HPP to get more info on this. With a HPP, you can also raise your Rev limter, change the shift points (at what MPH the car shifts at) and how firm it is. It just tricks the tranny into thinking its running at WOT (wide open throttle) when it isn't.

So, if you have it set to 100% and just doing around town driving, the tranny things you are flooring it, so it shifts like it. You won't notice too much of a change when you are really racing - or when you are at WOT (with the HPP).

Now, I've never had a Trans-Go kit, so I so of my info maybe off. I am also not a guru at the HPP, but I do own one, and love it. If you are only limited to $150 bucks, I would get the HPP hands down.

I current have installed 3.73s and a 180* thermostat in my '98 Z. For my HPP, I have set to:

6400 Rev Limiter
180 Thermostat
Set to 3.73s
Shift frimess to 25%
Shift points changed to:
1 - 2 shift +3 over stock
2 - 3 shift +3 over stock
3 - 4 shift +4 over stock

The HPP will only allow you to change one car at a time. So, if you buy one, you can't let your buddy use it - only you. It remembers the VIN of the car that was changed until you put it back to stock.

I hope I've help, and if I'm wrong on any points, please, any other user correct me.

There are different settings for an HPP shift firmness? My only experience is with an LT1 HPP and it had shift firmness on or off. That's it. No percentage choices.

What are the LS1 HPP shift firmness choices?
