SES on again
Hey everyone, I have a good one for you to figure out. I bought my car 2001 z28 convertible with 3.23/a4 about a year ago with 34k on it. It now has about 44k on it. Right after I bought the car, I had to have the left side cat changed. Then about 3 months ago my SES light came on and Autozone scanned it and it came up with a p1415 code. I replaced the check valve and the light went off by itself. A couple weeks later, SES returned with a p1416. I replaced the other check valve and the light again went off by itself. Last night on my way home, my SES came back on. I had it scanned and it came up with a p1416 and p1415 again, as well as a p0430. The p0430 is probably just a cat or O2 sensor, but shouldn't I get a p0410 (secondary AIR malfunction) if there's a problem between both check valves? Both check valves are new and bank 2 has a new pipe as well as I bent the old one trying to take the old valve off. This kinda has me stumped. PLEASE HELP!!!
Hmmm...maybe the P1415 and P1416 were history codes? When the MIL goes off by itself without clearing or resetting the PCM, believe it stays there for 40 ignition cycles. P0430 is probably your passenger side cat, get the dealer to replace it free. I'd reset the PCM manually and see what happens.
I'll try unplugging the battery and see what happens. I also checked the AIR system and it's funtioning properly, at least to the check valves. could it be the heated O2 sensors or an electrical issue that controls/monitors them? I've thought about buying some headers (as an early christmas gift instead of an xbox 360 that my wife wants to get me!!) and adding a catback later and having the AIR and cat codes deleted so my SES won't come on again, but would there be any negative reprocussions from that?
Try resetting it this way, no tools required - idle will be grumpy until it relearns:
Turn key on, don't start car
Pull PCM BATT and PCM IGN fuses in engine compartment
Wait 5-10 min
Turn ignition off
Replace fuses
Lots of people do !AIR and !cats when doing headers with no problems - just need to delete the air and rear 02 codes...unless you live where there's visual emissions inspections.

ok, I did what you said and my SES is off. I believe it only takes 3 consecutive failed starts for the p1415 and 1416 codes to be thrown if there's still a problem with the check valves. So I'll keep an eye open for that. How long is it until the cat throws a code if it's bad? Also, do you or anyone else know how much of an increase installing long tubes w/no cats would be? Thanks again
I'm thinking P1415/P1416/P0430/P0420 will throw a code on the first cold start with a failure - every code is different though. You can check it out for sure by looking them up at www.gearchatter.com
