Removing shifter in Z28
Removing shifter in Z28
Just curious as to how hard this might be. I'm supposed to give a speech next thursday on how to drive a stick. I thought it might be nice to actually take the shifter in to show the class. I don't want to do this if it would be too much trouble to remove then install it again. Thanks for any help!

The most annoying thing, which isn't that bad either, is removing the center console.. Its been a while, but you have to remove the top part, then get the parking brake straight up so you acn remove the bottom part be a little careful not to snap any clips. don't forget to disconnect the cigarette tray light and adapter.
Then you have access tor emove the shifter..
IMO, I don't think its worth it.. If you want a prop, just grab one out of a junk yard.. Steal some images from howstuffworks..

I can swap one aftermarket in for the stock piece in about 20 minutes, but I've done it on two cars twice each. However you should add sealant back to the trans to seal it back. If this is the stock shifter its going to take some more time. Besides your disturbing the stock mounting.
However even getting the shifter out won't show much to the class. It has a ball on the end of the stick and while it seems easy to row the gears when in the car, when its out its rather stiff in the side to side range. Its really not worth it for just a one day speech. IMO
