Whenever I get a different vehicle I sit down and go thru the owners manual. It's chock full of info on how things work and what the manufacturer requires for fuels, lubricants, and such.
Check out the service and maintenance sections. Recommended service intervals, bulb, belt, plug replacement part numbers.
It's a really good book.
I had a 99 Z28 for 3 years.
I ran regular in it, and had no problems, and noticed no real "lack of power"...
However, after reading posts from some of the respected, knowledgable people here, I decided it was in my best interest to run premium.
I honestly did not notice and 'seat of the pants' power improvement or what-not, and regular is stated as acceptable int he owner's manual.
But, I figured... I paid a lot of money on the car... so why try to save a few bucks a year on something I spent so much money on, and really do care about.

I had a 2001 Z28 that was a demo vehicle. The manager had been driving it for a couple of months and had been putting the dealer's cheak 87 octane gas in it 3,000 miles. That car pinged all the time, even when I ran 93 octane. The dealer had to run top-end cleaner every month and after about 6 months it finally stopped pinging on me.
After that car got wrecked, I bought a 2001 WS6. The owner said it was alway run with 93 octane. I have only run 93 octane (with the one tank of 91 when I gassed up in Arkansas and 91 was the highest they had). I've never had any pinging or other problems that remotely could be traced back to the gasoline.
According to the manual, yes ... you can run 87, but you will suffer a loss of performance. These cars are designed to run on Premium gas. You should only run the 87 stuff if you're on fumes and have GOT to get gasoline to get the car home.

you have different settings for the different octanes so it doesn't self destruct on you. it does harm the engine but its not gonna kill it within a day. they do this because most of my fellow teenagers think the higher priced gas does nothing..... i think i'm the only one in this town under 20 that ONLY uses 93-94 octane

I run 89 octain, never had a problem with it, pleanty of power. 87 the car will ping if under WOT. It doesnt hurt ne thing, the car is designed to be run on 87 if there is nothing esle around. Lookin in your owners manual it says 87 is perfectly safe. You just may not get the power you want. Also i would suggest running some dry gas, or some fuel system cleaner every 3k if you insist on useing the cheap stuff, just to help with deposits.

Thanks guys. I don't have an LS1, yet. I have a third gen. www.geocities.com/akshay95624/index.html. Where I live anything higher than a 91 octane is extremly hard to find.
I forgot that the compression ratio on the LS1 is 10.x
That's a sign to run 91 octane.

I know inside my fuel door it says premium recommended but the highest octane I can find up here is 91. When I was down in FL they had 93 everywhere. Is it okay to run 91 or should I use some kind of octane booster and if so what kind?
