Rear wheels rattle

Rear wheels rattle
The story so far: I had the car (00 SS Convertible) in for service 3 weeks ago.
The dealer called me and told me my car was very sick and the rear end was busted because it had leaked all fluid.
I got the car back and only found the seal and fluid on the invoice, no other parts. So why did they tell me the rear end was busted?
They even gave me a rental car because they kept the car for a week.
Today I was messing with the alarm sensor and found by accident that the rear wheels seem loose. Not the wheels on their studs, but the whole wheel assembly slightly moves when I gently move the top of the wheel side to side.
Also something is rattling badly in there. The LCAs and the PHR are not loose, neither is the exhaust.
Does anyone have an idea what may be wrong? Is a wheel that is gently rocked side to side supposed to feel like it is moving between two defined limits which are maybe 1mm apart?
I am not even sure whether the car is safe to be driven the way it is now
Thanks
Chris
