Real Quick Question....

I just bought a 1999 Camaro SS and I'm kinda new to this whole car/mod thing. Just out of curiosity, whats the differece between my LS1 that comes stock and the regular LS1 that I can buy and install? Only about 30 horsepower (cause it says the crate LS1 is 350 hp)?

Re: Real Quick Question....

I think the crate motor is tested with headers, open intake, and limited or no accessories mounted...and your Camaro is rated with all the F-Body specific exhaust, accessories, and intake system. I believe the cam, heads, compression ratio, etc. is the same.

agreed...

it is possible that it has the LS6 intake as well, yours has the LS1 intake...bout 5-7hp on a stock motor.

also realize that the LS1 motors were under-rated at 305hp.

MANY were dynoing nearly that much at the wheels making them more like 335-340hp at the crank.

Re: Real Quick Question....

As stated above, the crate motor may have been tested with a different set of parts. I'd be willing to bet it has the updated components like 28.8lb injectors, LS6 intake, different PCM tuning, and a slightly smaller cam that was altered due to the removal of the EGR system. There may be a few other things here and there, but those should be the brunt of the power differences. Either way, the aftermarket provides pleanty of opportunity to fix these short comings.

Re: Real Quick Question....

They are all basically the same. GM just advertised the F-Body having less power because they didn't want people buying them over Corvettes for performance reasons. But we did anyway
