Question The real deal on underrated LS1 hp numbers?

Hey everyone...
I am the proud owner of a 1994 Chevy Camaro Z28. It's only mildly modded becuase of my budget, but recently ran into a great deal on a local LS1 for sale. I recently did some more research on these wonderful little F-bodies and found that they are extremely underrated in terms of their hp numbers. As we all know, they are rated at 305 hp from the factory, but I am reading about people that are getting over 350 hp completely bone stock. IS this possible? How rare are these factory freaks, or all they are all like this? I am running mid-high 13's with my little bolt-ons and free mods on street tires, should I be expecting low 13's from the LS1 Z28? What have you guys experienced at the dyno with your cars being bone stock?
Thanks
Allen

Well the 98-00 ls1's will dyno between 280-300 and the 01-02 will dyno 300-315 stock. There really isnt any factory freaks since they all dyno in this area. The people who dyno 330 to the wheels stock have something wrong with the dyno. If you think rationally a freak would have to be something assebled wrong at the plant which somehow results in more power which GM has not figured out yet, chances are slim to none leaning towards none.

Those ratings are rear wheel horsepower making 350 HP a very reasonable estimate at the crank which is how all the car manufacturers rate the engines output.

Are you talking rwhp or overall hp? That sounds about right, the anywhere from 350-370 hp claims just seemed a little outrageous to me. Isn't going to stop me from getting my hands on an LS1 though Nice car, by the way. It looks exactly like the one that I am going to test drive here in town *and damn well may buy once I get mine sold*. The only difference is this one has Flowmasters. It's gonna sound plenty mean but it's not exactly my exhaust of choice. Oh well

Sorry I posted my reply to the other guy and yours must have come up after I submitted mine. So these things ARE making 350 at the crank? Are the LT1s underrated at all?
Thanks

Think of it this way. What engine is used in the 97+ corvette? The LS1. What do they rate it at? 350 HP. What engine is in the 98+ F-bodys? The LS1. What do they rate it at? 305 HP. It is nearly the identical engine but yet they rate it at less. It is just marketing and nothing more. The 98+ f-bodys make 350 HP at the engine.

Rip that worthless piece of sh|t Slowmaster exhaust off of it and install a GMMG chambered exhaust. I just installed mine today and HOLY ****ING SH|T!!! Absolutely THE BEST catback exhaust for the LS1 money can buy. Got it for $650 shipped through a group purchase from f-bodyhideout.com I've actually heard that the LS1 flowmaster exhaust system will rob horsepower!

Damn...I didn't know it was THAT big of a deal I thought about doing that as well, but wasn't too sure. Depends on what kinda money I'm gonna have lying around when I get the car. I heard one guy's car that sounded just absolutely amazing. Said a Mufflex exhaust. Honestly, I haven't heard of them being a really good company. Any more info on these guys? I took a look at their website. They seem reputable, but their prices are really low, low enough for you to question quality.

intake, exhaust, and tuning netted my car to 314rwhp and 324rwtq, and mine is a 4L60E. Still don't know the horsepower at the crank, but these cars are very underrated.

Same with the SRT4.

assuming 20-22% loss from an auto ur making between 376 and 383 horsepower at the flywheel. pretty kewl ehhhh

i love these cars. ive never had mine dynoed but most people i know who know what their talking about put it at about 330-340 rwhp which is....

402-414 BHP!!!!! with bolt ons ONLY

once again LS1 =

20-22% loss for an auto? That seems high.

I'd put it more in the 15-18% range.

15% would definitely be for a stick....18% maybe for an auto but it usually seems to be a little more...

Yeah, the LS1 is definitely VERY underrated. My car is an Intake/Exhaust car and went 12.86 @ 109.1 the other night. Not really sure exactly what kind of horsepower #'s are associated with that, seeing as the car has never been on a dyno, but my guess is that it would have to have at least 320-330 at the wheels. Does that sound abou right to you?
