Question about Cams
Question about Cams
Im engine savvy, but not super savvy. i know what a cam is for and all that, but i dont know some things as far as getting a new one. Can you put just a cam in and be done? no computer or head changes or anything? also, does installation labor costs kill a normal man lol? also, if thats what a guy can do, what kind of cam would make around 400-425 horsepower, how much would just the cam cost, and would it jack up fuel mileage?
Sorry for all the questions but i dont have anyone else to ask.
Thanks you guys.

Picking a camshaft really depends on what you want to do with the car. You can go with a mild cam, for something a little better than stock, or you can go with something bigger that will make some really nice power. I would recommend tuning with any cam you go with. You don't have to go with heads if you don't want to. What mods do you have so far? M6 or A4?

i have exhaust and intake, and i hate spending too much money on it, it has 82000 miles on it. it is an m6. i want around 400-425 horseys, and i dont know what kind of cam that would take. i doubt i can afford heads. how do you tune them? have someone do it? im kinda lost.
So what kind of gains can i get with the cam and no heads? can i get into the 400 range cleanly? what does this cost if the install is done by me and some guys? im hoping around 300. So basicly i need to know the cost and gain without headers, im a poor college kid.
400 to the wheels without headers is gonna be tough
but 400 crank hp isn't to hard at all.
any cam is gonna need valve springs..plain and simple
there are some good cam kits available through the site sponsors.

to do a cam swap the right way, you need atleast 1,000 to spend. Go to thunderracing.com. They have the best packages IMO at the best prices. If you are only looking to spend $300, then spend it on a few more bolt ons.
To simplify things a bit. A typical cam swap looks like this
TR 224 Cam: $400
918 Valve springs: $200
Random gaskets: $50
Installation $400-500
Numbers are rough...but they give you the general idea.
If your looking to spend a less than this, a set of Flowtech longtube headers can be had for $380. Good bang for your buck.

God i didnt know they cost that much. Im not too into the headers, my friend just put slp longs in his 02 TA and i dont think they helped him alot. i want a major upgrade in power, but it doesnt look like thats going to happen. i wanted something that would make the 400 horsepower that wasnt a blower or nitrous. Christ, that blew out my bubble fast.
