Pulling engine

Going to pull a friends engine, he has a m6. My thought is, i also searched, would be it better to pull the engine with the transmission connected or unbolt the 6speed and just pull the block. Also how hard to unbolt the 6speed, .... clutch?, ive done tq converters but never worked on a manual. Any tips would be cool. thanks

Re: Pulling engine

i say take it all out as one. remvoe it through the bottom. the trans is pretty easy to remove. something like 10 bolts around the bellhousing. i did it with the driveway when i replaced my clutch. couple of the top bolts require a 2ft of extensions to reach easily.

Re: Pulling engine

He means don't pull the engine out the top. Leave the engine on the front wheels and raise the body up. Also, 8 bolts connect the bellhousing to the block. 8 bolts connect the tranny to the bellhousing.

Re: Pulling engine

In short: Pull the tranny. Then, drop the engine from underneath the body. I think I saw a full guide for the proceedure once if anyone has the link?

Re: Pulling engine

Just unbolt the bellhousing and slid the motor forward, ther isnt any connection between the two, unlike the auto which has 3 bolts. hope that helps...

Re: Pulling engine

When we did mine, I think we got the two upper bolts on the tranny by going through the hole in the floor for the shifter with some extensions. With the shifter out of the way, you should try that. Might make it a little easier.

Re: Pulling engine

someone said unbolt the 15mm bolts well thats the transmission from the bellhousing correct? so am i going to unbolt the transmission from the bellhousing, or the bellhousing from the block itself, i talked to a guy who does transmissions and he said for that car to unbolt it from the block. hope im explaining myself so it makes since.

Re: Pulling engine

leave the tranny on the bell housing, and undo the bellhousing from the motor. Then pull the transmission and bellhousing out as one.

It's actually way easier to pull the trans off of the bellhousing then pulling the housing off the motor is cake. I've done it both ways.

Re: Pulling engine

so i took on i think it was 7 bolts from the bellhousing to the block, pretty sure ive got them all 1/2 they were. Now when it comes time to lift the engine out, ive not seen the inside of a t56, will they just seperate/slide apart? Or will i have to remove the clutch and clutch fork ect? if so what do i do to get access to them.

You want to remove the tranny before the motor if you're pulling it from the top (much easier to pull from the bottom, but hey...). Once the bolts are out, the trans should pull right off the back of the motor. Just be careful not to damage the input shaft. You should support it with a jack or something as they weigh more than 100lbs. It might need a little persuading too if it's been attached to the motor for a while. As for the clutch, it's bolted to the flywheel, which is bolted to the crank. It's not going anywhere. There's no clutch fork on an LS1. They're hydraulic, so you'll have to disconnect the hydraulic lines on the driver's side of the trans that go to the slave cylinder (pushes on the diaphram to engage/disengage the clutch). Hope this helps some. You might also look into getting a manual at an Autozone type place if you haven't already. They're good for torque specs and general instructions on procedures like this.
