pros and cons about slp 160* thermostat

only drawback is that it will take an extra minute to get to get good and warm in the winter ( i see you are in PA).
the pros are lower operating temps, increased hp, increased efficiency and less chance of damage because it is designed to stick in the open position if it ever malfunctions

The car will run much cooler with a 160 T-Stat and a fan switch or re-programed fan settings.
Over the winter i had the 160 T stat and stock fan settings and it took me a long time to get my car warm. The car never did get blazzing hot like it did before. The car would sometimes get hotter than 180, but it was cooler than before the thermo install.
Now i have reprogrammed fans from PCMforless, the car never gets hotter than 180...i love it.
I would say do it! Its 20 bucks, and will increase the life of your motor!

I am sorry i have an LT1. My Hypertech 160 thermo was 20 bucks, the local autozone had to order it for me.

I've got the Hypertech 160* t-stat in my car and have had no complaints. Granted, it doesn't get bitterly cold here in Memphis, but I haven't noticed that it takes very much longer to get heat in the car.
One thing about a 160* t-stat though .... unless you retune for the fans to come on sooner, or you install a fan switch, you really won't get much out of it . The t-stat is only half the cooling solution. Fans are the other half.

come on man you've been around long enough to stop propagating that half truth.
fans temperature settings have NOTHING to do with the cooling system when moving. under normal driving conditions, and even light traffic you WILL benefit from the lower stat. without the need for new fan settings
now for sitting in the staging lanes or in heavy traffic (who cares about 5hp gains in city traffic?) you are correct, a lower stat will have little affect on your cars temperature since there is little or no air crossing the radiator. this is really the only time reset fans or a switch will help.
and when it comes down to it, i perfer my fan switch, that way i can turn it on even when the car is off...to further help cool the engine.

You should get a fan switch or your fans reprogrammed when you do the 160 Stat. When i sat in bad standstill traffic, or stop and go kinds of driving, the car would still heat up to 220 degrees or more. I am sure nobody here likes to see there coolant temp needle skyrocket towards the red. A fan switch or reprogrammed fan settings will change that.

Sitting in the staging lanes, the fans coming on sooner keep the temps low and avoid heat soak.
Sitting in stop-n-go traffic, the fans keep the engine running cooler when they are tuned to come on sooner with the 160* t-stat.
So how can you say it's a Half Truth? Not flaming, just asking.
If you just do the t-stat, you will NOT get the full benefit UNLESS you also do something to the fans.
