Pos '98 Oil pump going...consumption too? Options.
I've got 95,000 miles on my ls1, and since I've owned it from about 80,000, the oil pump was LOW but safe, running around 40 psi, 30 off idle. I would lose about 1 qt of oil for every oil change (at the end of 3000 I would be a LITTLE low, but no biggie for this mileage), so overall no burning or consumption issues. A few weeks ago, my psi is now 20-25 off idle when hot, and can't break 30-35 when running. Now, I notice that I lose 1 qt of oil every week. Is this possibly because of my low oil psi, creating high internal temps and possibly burning more oil within? I am going to sell the car in spring, or fix this problem now, but I am not 100% sure if a new pump will fix the problem with oil loss. I see no leaks, no smoke on startup or running.........If I knew that I didn't cause any damage to my engine, I would just get the pump and drive it..........but now I'm considering selling the car as is because I will probably get rid of it anyways. Any ideas? Are these 2 issues related? Thanks guys.

Replace the pump. I drove a 98 with 80k at a small used car dealership, and it did the same thing as yours. Mine gets about 40 at hot idle, 60 cruising, and 70 at WOT.

Just ordered a "modified" ls6 pump from thunder racing, on sale today. Such a BITCH job to do though, I thought I could just drop the pan... then I saw a how to guide and it's too much crap for me to handle.........should've known better.
My only concern now is if it will still consume 1 qt a week on me.......it never did till the psi dropped even more........eh we will see.
