Is porting the mass air flow housing worth it?
I did it and it is a great mod IMO. GMHTP just did a dyno test on a ported maf and got 5 rwhp , that's awesome for a free mod. People pay $50 for the smooth bellows and get nothing from the dyno (also done by GMHTP mag this month).
You can see my mods and times in sig , they speak for themselves.
As for leaning out, yes I beleive it is a problem for the 01-02 models not the 98-00s.
You could always buy a set of ported ends , for $99, this way if you need to go back to the stock ends for some reason you can. I got my ends from my buddy who had them left over from his former LT1 (same part, at least the ends are).

99 SS, Dark Metallic Blue, M6
SLP lid, KN, TBB, SLP Y-pipe, SLP loudmouth
ported MAFs, Nitto 315 DRs
Currently: 1/4 13.06@113.8 (gtech runs high in mph by about 4mph), 0-60 4.77 (w/passenger) Gtech'd
12.99@110.2, 2.06 60ft - Tazzo.
Also, 331 rwhp as measured on the Gtech
