Personally, I wouldn't hand port LS1 heads. I would suggest you send your heads to TEA in Bowling Green and have them send you a set of CNC ported heads.

TEA has been getting excellent results putting their CNC ported 5.3 L heads on the LS1 motor.

You can buy a set of LS1 heads complete for $200 to $350. That's all it will cost you if you should screw up completely, which is highly unlikely. That isn't much so I say go for it. The only way you learn is to do it. Do a search on all the LS1 websites and read as much as you can find on the subject. Since you won't have a flow bench handy I would suggest keeping it pretty simple and don't go for max flow on your first set. I have friend with a 99 vette that runs mid 6s in the eighth with home ported heads. So it can be done. Good luck.
