To port MAF or not?

I did a search but couldn't find a definitive answer. Is it a good idea to port (remove the metal divider) the MAF sensor on a LS1 or not? I know how to port the MAF, just don't know if I should.

Do not port, especially since you've got an A4. Can mess up your tranny as it will cause your shifts to soften up and increase slippage.
At most just descreen.

It's a huge debate, I ported my A4 and have been happy with it.

The reason I wouldnt do it is because the MAF uses the air flow calculations based on the inside diameter of the MAF. When you port it, it doesnt correct for a size change, so it can throw off the ratio.

I have a ported and descreened MAF. No probs at all. I'm waiting for a dyno day to try it vs a stock one and see about gains, but it sure feels a little more torquey.

Thumbs up

I installed "ported" MAF ends on my 2001 Z28 A4, however it was 2 days before I had the car dyno tuned, my vehicle did run ok for the 2 days before I got it tuned. If you have an automatic, I would not do it unless you are going to have it tuned, for the PCM DOES use the MAF + speedometer readings to shift the automatic transmission.

A side note, the Corvette MAF I believe is descreened from the factory.

If you're gonna port your MAF, do what I did. I found a guy who installed aftermarket MAF ends and I bought his stock ends dirt cheap.

Now, I've got one set that I've ported, and a stock set complete with screen.

Well, for now I will just keep it descreened.

One more question, is the Corvette's meter tuned for the non-screened sensor?

the corvette unit, typically sold as the ZO6 maf, is larger, has no screen and is calibrated specifically for it's dimensions.

had one on my 96 and noticed a decent top end gain

Only Free mod I didnt do. Too many problems. Certainly dont want to go too lean, and with the IAT mod with the most agressive Fuel/Air mixture the car can do, I dont need the knocking or the worry...

The biggest problem is fixing the MAF values in the PCM. Until there's a good method to flow testing the MAF's to correct the table, I wouldn't use anything aftermarket. If you buy a Z06 MAF, just load the Z06 MAF table into your table. It'll have more cells since it goes to a higher frequency.

The ported MAF ends have been reported to cause damage to A4's as a result of the PCM thinking there's less load on the engine - because it's not accurately reporting airflow through the MAF.

Or, switch to speed density

Don't touch it.

If you must, I will trade you a set of stock ported ends AND a set of aftermarket plastic ends for stock ends with a screen. PM me if interested.
