polishing....

what do u guys use to get the best finish and with what grit do u sand the metal down when it needs to in order to avoid swirls and scratches

Depends on what you want to do... what part(s) ??? For example painted aluminum: paint stripper, NO sandpaper, scotch brite, Mother's chrome or metal polish gives a very good finish....
Stainless steel: 800 (wet) sandpaper and scotch brite, then metal polish

I'd use a sanding flap, grit 80then 120 then 400. Then 600 hand, 1000 hand, then polish.

For the valve covers, that's fine...but for the TB, use a dremel if you have one.
