Is Piston Slap that common? If it is should I not buy a camaro?

I have three dealerships trying to find me a 98-99 Z28 6-speed, I want a Z28 so bad, but I don't want to get a Z28 if the engine is going to go to crap on me. Should I worry about the piston slap if the engine has 50,000 miles on it.

Thanks

piston slap usualy dosent result because of mileage, its is more of a defect in design. Ive heard cases of it happening in 20k cars. Check out http://www.pistonslap.com

I don't know of it ever causing major problems with longevity. I wouldn't worry about it. If it doesn't have it by 10,000 miles it probably won't.

Where are you from? There's several really sweet SS's available around here for cheap right now.

I'm from Northern Indiana, so those cars would be way to far away. So your saying that I shouldn't worry about piston slap because its not that common.

It's very common! I just don't see it as a reason not to get one.

Right now you can get an '00 SS convertible for 19,000.

You can also get an '00 SS with TTops for 19,500.

Both cars are gorgeous and in great shape. There are others but these are the ones I know of specifically.

These are private sellers btw.

Nope. As long as the car has been well maintained, you have nothing to worry about in regards to piston slap.

Good luck with your search!

I haven't found an LS1 yet that doesn't have it. My buddie's 02 Firehawk has it, mine has it. It's really no big deal, it's just the aluminum design of the engine.

it is that common, even on 02's. although, if it bothers you, don't buy it. many buy it knowing that and still bitch. if it doesn't bother ya, let'r rip.

erm... dammage depends on how bad it is, and yes it will cause above average wear. Think about it, the piston has a loose fit inside the cylinder wall (that is the sound you hear). You will notice above average oil compsion with piston slap. Dont think that it is impossible to solve, all you have to do is replace the piston rings and problem is usualy solved.

I was simply saying that I never heard of a engine that has piston slap with 1-20,000 miles. I have heard piston slap on engines with 120,000+ miles. Never the less it a great motor with amazing power.

Well actually if the piston slap is heard all the time, even after the engine is warmed up, then I would be concerned.. My car has piston slap for about 5 minuets after start up when it is cold, otherwise I would not worry about it...

Truck has over 100,000 Miles slaps for about 5 minutes when cold then disapears. TA has 25,000 miles has very quite slap which lasts about 2 minutes then disapears. Both run like champs and aint a worry in my heart

Excesive piston slap can be a problem what ls1s have is nothing more then GM being a c hair off on measurements and piston desighn. Once they engine warms up and the piston expands the problem disapears hence why GM doesnt care about the problem and why 98 % of us crazy car guys dont care either
