pinging??

My car has been doing this since I bought late summer, and I'm starting to wonder if the noise is really pinging or something else. It's kind of that higher pitched metallic sound. It starts making it at around 5000rpm until about 6000 when I shift. I thought for sure the car was running lean up top but when I changed the plugs and wires, none of the plugs had any hint of white on the tip. They were black like any other worn plug gets. I haven't scanned with Autotap for any KR, but the power doesn't seem to fall off anywhere. I've also run a can of GM Top Engine cleaner through as well. Anyone else's car do this or am I just being paranoid?

Re: pinging??

Timing could be a little off for some reason or another... also, there is a wire on LS1s with a washer on it that slips down and rubs against the block causing a high-pitched ringing kind of sound. Not a big deal. Get your car on a dyno and have them do an air/fuel scan.

Yeah it's probably that washer rattling now that you mentioned it. I'm almost positive the ignition timing is where it should be. I'll be getting a tune from madz28 in the next week and hope to get it dynoed afterwards while it's still pretty much stock but with a recent tune up. Kinda curious to see if mine's anything of a factory freak or a factory dog.

How can you be? Run autotap on it and see where your long term fuel trims are. See where your O2s are at WOT. Or put it on a dyno with a wide band.
Then you can be almost positive. Right now you're just guessing. And sometimes guessing = bang.

Re: pinging??

My MAF is clean. I made sure of that when I ran the Top Engine cleaner through 2 weeks ago.

Al,

I hope to find out for sure with a dyno run hopefully in the next couple weeks (brand new dynojet), but since the original plugs didn't have any traces of white on them, I don't think I'm running too lean at higher rpms. But I guess it is just a guess though, an educated one at that.
