Open or Closed Loop with 160 Stat?
Ok I heard the other day that if you get a 160 stat without the "programming" your car dosent go into closed loop, hurts your performance, and destroyes your sensors. Is this true?

I've never heard that. Basically all the programming does is turn the fans on earlier, to better work with the 160 stat. The computer should sense the rest. I don't see how the car running a little cooler would ruin the sensors.
From what I understand the temp to worry about is much lower... at most 140 degrees.
I have had the free thermostat mod and the auto fan mod on my car for 2 years now and have seen no issues... Seems like I would have set a code or something by now, and there are folks that have had the mods even longer.
Doesn't sound right to me.

Re: Open or Closed Loop with 160 Stat?
This can have effects IF the temps stay at 160 or lower and the PCM calibration is stock.
Reasons, the PCM is programmed :
For the internal smog tests the PCM runs, to have a VALID drive cycle the engine must be started under 122 water degrees and MUST exceed 160 degrees.
If that is not meet then it is not considered a valid drive cycle and the I/M tests cannot get into a passed state and could take the PCM many drive cycles to get those tests completed in a shorter timeframe.
Also depending on the PCM calibration in winter months if temps stay below 160 degrees the PCM using different amount of fuel when in WOT then when the temps are hotter.
Using a 160 stat would cause engine to take longer to heat up so that cold start functions like rear O2s or AIR take longer to meet the PCM calibration or exhaust cooler so O2s report incorrectly if they are not hot enough.
As a norm other then in winter weather using 160 stat would not be a issue since engine runs hotter then the fully opened position of that stat.

the free thermo mod is a way to turning your stock stat into a 160 for really cheap..

They have a question like this in the Nov isue of GMHTP. Interestingly, in Ed Wright's (Owner of Fastchips) relpy, he states that LS1 engines tend to make the most power at 180-205*.
