Is the only diff In Power between '98-'02 Intake & Cam?

I am thinking of getting a '98 or '99 Z because I don't want to spend a lot.

Is the only diff in power the Cam & Intake on the '01-'02 .
If I can save five or six thousand maybe I can get a Intake and Cam from a '01 or '02 and put it in a '98 or '99.

Any sugestions guys
Thanks,
Jim

The late models actually have a smaller cam. The LS6 intake is what I believe helps them the most. They also went to cast iron exhaust manifolds, away from the stainless tube type manifolds of earlier models. They said the cast makes more power, but I personally think the switch was purely cost cutting. The cast manifolds are much cheaper for GM than the tubes.
It all comes down to the intake IMHO.
Maybe just an HP or two from the manifolds, but not much.
The only thing the cam is good for is torque.
Get a 98, but be very picky.

people say stuff about us having a "truck" cam or a "smaller" cam, but what it boils down to is how the car drives.. I hear many 98-00 cars griping about no low end torque.. what does it take to get going? TORQUE? I THINK SO! hehe In any case dyno numbers stock for stock do show a difference and I think that the cam is very nice.. I personally like to go from 1st to 4th and be able to switch into 6th soon after and then still out run most sedans on the freeway when fighting for lanes...

I only need to downshift when they have something quick...

I am happy with mine.. soon will have traction at the track and will post some new numbers..

and I am completely BONE STOCK.. not even a filter change.

psycho: You are absolutely right about the earlier cars not having the torque that the later cam gives. This matters alot when it comes to stock for stock... but I would rather have the larger cam once I start modding. Which was day one
All an early car would need to match you is LS6 intake IMO. He would just have to rev higher to do it. Once you get into more advanced mods like headers, etc... all bets are off and both early and late cars are neck and neck... no further advantages/disadvantages.

Dave, I can certainly understand that.. Especially with how rampant blind mods are on our cars. I define blind mods as mods done to a car just cause everyone else has done them. Not because anyone has proof that they are best. I am sure you know how this goes on.
I feel that for me personally, every mod has to be a dollar spent towards a goal. I know others dont feel that way but to each their own.. Hence why my car is still stock.. In the garage I have:
* Et Streets (waiting to find a shop that will install tubes.. Discount tire here wont)
* LCA's (from my other car)
* MAC 3PT STB
They are still not installed. I could do so very easily but I do not feel that I should do it just cause. I would rather do so after I get time to hit the track more. Essentially I want my car to remain as close to stock as possible while running mid 12's. If I can do that and do so relatively stock with minimal bolt ons the more fun it is for me.. Sure I may not win street races all the time going this route but I race on the street about once every 2-3 weeks now..
So I dont really mind as thats my main priority.. My priority is enjoying the car I am paying for.

hehe
But ya never know.. I may open my restaurant ahead of schedule and make a killing and be in a twin turboed dyno queen soon after. hehhe

Hey!
Best of luck in your venture. Hope you succeed with flying colors!

Something to think about when tubing ET Streets...
The tires should be screwed to the rims. Alot of folks don't like doing this, so they run their ETs tubeless, which can be done. If you put tubes in and don't screw the rims, you stand a good chance of spinning the rim inside the bead of the tire and shredding your tube.
Just something to consider.

The 01-02 5.3 truck cam that went into the LS1s is a less agressive cam. The LS6 intake is what really makes the power. Other changes include the different exhaust manifolds and injectors, which show minimal difference. The 98s also have different valve covers and individually mounted coil-packs. Good luck with your purchase!

Yes, but if your savin a lot of $$$$ on the car, and your going to put a lot of power into it, you're going to need a better clutch than the Z06 clutch. With the extra cash, you can get a Mcleod Rev-Lok II for $420 which is one of the best clutches in my opinion!

On a VERY cold night at Rockingham, NC.......................

In a Bone Stock 2000 SS, M6, with no SLP Mods...........

Granny Shifting the car............................................... ...

I ran a 13.45 ET @ 106.9 MPH.......................................

No doubt in my mind, the car will go low 13's or maybe high 12's.

No LS6 intake or truck cam here....................................

Enjoy your cars.

its more like 50-60 hp not 80, regaurdless of what GM says. Kinda the opposite of ford. we underrate

Different heads and ca is the main reason, and depending on the year ls1.. intake as well.

and other "minor" things
