Oil pump question
I have a 01 z28 and the oil pressure isn't the greatest going down the road so I parked it. I went through it a couple months ago and all the seals and bearings look good. Could this be the oil pump? And also is this very hard to change? A website with instructions and pictures would be awesome. I guess I could buy a manual but anything will help!!!
Re: Oil pump question
did you check the oil sending unit at the back of the block? they give faulty readings sometimes a good auto repair guy can hook up a gauge to check oil pressure and to see if sensor is bad. just sayin..
Re: Oil pump question
cummins2005,
Although it would be splendid if you did stipulate an approximate oil pressure reading, I am happy to oblige your request by posting up a concise write-up of the procedure for replacing the oil pump. Please note that this is a very basic guide so I may be missing a few minor details here and there!
**For reference: LS1 Oil Pump diagram
1. Drain the crankcase.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
Front cover
Oil pan
Oil pump screen
Oil pan deflector
Oil pump and propeller shaft
--Install or connect the following--
Oil pump and propeller shaft. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
Oil pan deflector. Torque the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
Oil pump screen. Torque the bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
Oil pan
Front cover. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
3. Refill the crankcase.
It really is that straight-forward of a job. If you need further elaboration then do not hesitate to ask

Re: Oil pump question
The oil pan does not need to be removed. What is the oil pump propeller shaft? What you've outlined isn't very straight-forward. A much better description of what needs to be done can be found at http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=4 Regardless, who says the oil pump has failed? Oil pressure problems can be caused by multiple different failures, which is why we need more info from the OP.
