oil guage prob

my oil guage is showing too high. At Idle, it sits at a quarter forward instead of in the middle. When I rev it up, it pegs to almost 80 by the time I get to 3k rpms, If I let it sit awhile it will slowly go back to in the middle, but as soon as I start driving again, it goes back to the behavior I mentioned above. I put some oil in it cause it was low, seemed to stop for a while, but today when I checked it, the oil was too high, I'm going to try and take some of the oil out of it tomorrow, but do you guys/girls have any other ideas why its doin this? Car has 63k miles, and is about 1k miles short of its 3k mile oil change.

factory or aftermarket guage? If aftermarket, electric or mechanical guage?

its the stock guage. I took some oil out of it, so its at the proper level, but now it fluctuates at idle, and even going down the road. I'm having it checked out on Friday.

The problem is most likely the sending unit. You could attach a multimeter to the sending unit to confirm the source of the problem.

Make certain that your oil level is correct, then measure resistence from the oil sending unit to ground. If the meter jumps all over, the dash gauage is mearly responding to the fluctuating signal. If the resistence is steady, the problem is likely to be the guage.

thanks for the info, I'll remember that next time. By the way, where is the sending unit, I couldn't find it. I'm having the dealership determine the prob since I couldn't find the sending unit. Just so I know, Its not normal for the guage to fluctuate or read high (60 psi) when its cold, right cause thats what the guy said at the dealership, that they might read high in the cold (60 degrees F). Thanks for the help.

Update: Got the Car back from the dealership. They said they tested the car hot and cold. At cold it reads aprox 60psi, then as it warms up it reads about 40 psi (normal). They said even at cold, they reved it and it never went past 70 psi, (max on the guage is 80 psi, to me it looked like it was pegging, but I guess not). Summary: They said something like "Car operates as designed, no prob found, could not replicate prob." Anybody had their guage act diff overnight when it got cold, going from summer to winter? Also the guage fluctuating they couldn't replicate, I will continue to watch it, and if it still fluctuates, I'll take video of it, and see if I can figure out what makes it do that. The dealership didn't charge me though, I was thankful. If anybody has had an issue with their oil guage/pressure like mine, please pm me.
