Oil change light came on at 1200 miles???

Hi everyone,
This is sort of strange. I had just gotten my oil changed at 6000 miles. And now 1200 miles since that the oil change light comes on...I never used to have my oil change light come on and as soon as i hit the 3000 mile mark i would get one done. Wonder why this happened this time. Doubts

1) The place where I had done it last must have forgotten to reset the switch?
2) Then i had recently done a drive of about total of 500 miles on a road with very desolate stretch with just two rests of about 20 mins each. In between i had the chance to take the car at 130 mph plus..one case i touched 150 mph. But these were for a few seconds each at that speed...about 5-7 times total otherwise i was mostly on 80 mph most of the way.. I don't know if this had any bearing on this?

Any pointers folks?

Thanks in advance.

my thinking is that
1 they didn't reset the switch
2 whatever you call the sensor that sends the decision making info to the computer is bad
3 or those 1200 miles were harshly beaten on miles but im putting money on them not resetting the switch

My money says they didn't reset it.

Turn the car on, but don't start it. Hold the trip-reset button in for 12 seconds and the oil change light will flash. When it goes out, turn the car off for 10 seconds. That's all there is to resetting the oil-change light.

Since you change your oil every 3K miles, just change it when you normally do. And, then reset the light again because the grease monkeys don't know it's there.

Thanks Ztop,
Checked up with the service guys today and they said that the most likely case was the switch not being reset. It happens sometimes they say. And i am sure it does because it is something which is done at the end which anyone can forget :-)

Figures out because the car has been driven at around the last 3000 mile oil reset + 1200 miles = 4200 miles before it decided hey time for this fellow to change my oil!!

I reset it anyway. Nah...i wouldn't beat up my baby for all of those 1200 miles..won't do something nasty like that!
But just out of curiosity...do people really harshly beat up their own cars ..

Thanks for the help Ztop. You folks really know your stuff!

Kind Regards

Just keep in mind that the oil reset "program" is tracking certain variables, such as mileage, rpms, etc. Higher revving will trigger the light on sooner than it would otherwise.

lol i used to be one a them grease monkeys ... Sweet Job ... lol the manager never did tell us anything about reseting them switches tho. O and a word of advice , change your own oil from now on. Some of the schmucks that werk at 10 min oil change places , they dont give a **** bout ur car and do the work half asses ... Namely , my best friends lol

HardCore ... just to clarify that there was no offense intended by the term "Grease Monkey" ... it's just a generic term I've been using for years and years.

I agree with you about changing your own oil. These 10 minute lube places are convenient, but stop and think about it. When I change my oil, I let the oil drain for 20 -30 minutes, until there are only a few drops coming out the bottom.

They drain and refill in 10 minutes? They aren't getting all the old oil out in that amount of time. Plus, since I use Synthetic, I like knowing for sure that it goes in my car.

I've seen first hand where a customer pays for synthetic, but the order writer either failed to tell the tech, or the tech failed to follow instructions, and regular dino juice got put in.

I no dude , its cool , no offense taken , i just wanted to make you guys aware of the fact that most "grease monkeys" are lazy teenage schmucks who dont give a $hit about other ppl's cars lol and that 10 min changes r a ripoff

Well mine only gets run at the strip. I trailer it there. I wonder how long it will take for the oil change light to come on under those conditions??

Now I am seriously thinking of changing my own oil. I know that there are shops which do work in a professional manner, but like you said there might be places where things work just too fast! And we can't blame the poor folks there either..it's either that the managers there would have pressure to do the work fast and they pass it down to the guys doing it:-) or the fact that there is no time to do stuff at all with all the cars just pouring in:-)

Anyway thanks for all the advice and help again. This is just a really great place for all the F-body stuff!!!
