5W-30 is generally what is used. In your owners manual it says when you can/should (based on climate) use 10W-30.

To reset the oil change light after you change the oil press and hold the trip odometer reset button for about 12 seconds.

Here's a good piece of advice: Buy an oil filter wrench, they're less than $5.

The bottom of the oil filter is flush with the bottom of the oil pan and only about 7" of the side of the filter is exposed for you to put your bare hand around to tighen/untighten. It can be very tedious to do it by hand. If you use the filter wrench to get the filter off and on it'll be a breeze, trust me.

Seeing that you are from CA, I'd say synthetic 10W30 is good enough for your climate. That's what I use and have no problems with leaks or excessive consumption.

Why would you use 10w30 in this climate?

Because it is a bit thicker than 5W30 and therefore works better in warmer climates.

Actually 5w30 is better. It's thinner so it gets to through the engine a LOT quicker than 10w30 on startup. Plus its slicker so you get a lil more power from it. It gives about the same coverage as 10w30...but o well...I won't fight with ya

Actually last time I checked the manual it says that 5w-30 is recommended for all cold and hot climates. (the V6 has the 10W-30 recommended and is right next to the V8 page) and I always use the AC Delco filter. Also I always tighten and loosen the filter by hand with a help of a little scrap of sand paper for the grip on the filter, works great, and I never worry about overtightening.

actually, what the manual recommends for the V8 is 5w30 for any climate, and it says 10w30 is acceptable for the V8 in climates that do not get below 0F.

check your manual again, jr.

that's what I wrote, only I omitted the 10W-30 where it can be used but the 5W-30 is recommended

just pointing that out since the fact that it says you can use 10w30 in all areas that don't get below 0*F really applies to a lot of us....

i've heard that the reason they recommend 5w30 is for gas mileage. personally, i'll stick with my 10w30. i see no difference in the amount of time required to generate oil pressure at startup (compared to 5w30), and it could just be my imagination, but i think i consume less oil using 10w30.
