oil change ?

Hi guys and girls,
my car has 53K miles i've been using regular oil untill now, i read some posts and realize that syntetic oil might be better for my engine.
can i switch now after 53K miles to syntetic ? if so, what are the benefits ?

Lightbulb Short answer = yes, I would.

This is an "oft asked question" - see:

At any rate, synthethic IMHO are better lubricants, and I feel confident in my car extending change intervals to 5K or 'til the light comes on , whichever is first.

I find Mobil 1 to be one of the more popular oils, although Quaker State Full Synthetic is one of the more economical oils.

Royal Purple is also great stuff, but tends to be pricey - likea round ~$5.00/qt at NAPA.

I have also experimented w/ different oils - I have no fear of that, either.

Give 'em a try.

A little off topic, but there have been recent studies that show the oft quoted 3000 miles/3 months to be too conservative. I have 107K with Mobile 1 for the past 40k and change it every 4,500 miles and the engine runs great.

There have been posts here describing engine tear downs where there has been virtually nil engine wear from engines running Mobile 1. I'm sure Quakerstate Synthetic as well as other synthetics are not far off in they're protection if not on par.

Royal Purple is really pricey and some have said it's too thin to run all the time....Just what I've heard though.

I started using synthetics in my LT1 when I bought it @ 74K miles and drove it to 114K with no problems (leaks etc.) at all.

Previous owner had used regular dino oil until then...

I use Mobil 1 as well. 5w30 on 88K miles and no problems yet *knock on wood*

I ran 10w30 Royal Purple in my Mustang when I got it at 77K miles. It started leaking very shortly afterwards.

Just for FYI.. If you want your oil changed at a low price. Go to The Good old wallmart. Here around FT Knox, Ky they advertise a $22 service job Well I found out it's still $22 even if I tell them put Mobil 1 synthetic. Hell even if I buy the oil and filter from Wallmart and do it myself I can't do it that cheep.

the diffrence between 5W and 10W is the thickness of the oil, for cold weather areas use 5W for hot area use 10W...my .02 use 5w all the time, 10W doesn't work well under 32 degrees.

The only thing with Walmart is that they use the FRAM filter. Not the best, but adequate I suppose.

I go there to get mine done....15pt service check included and a vacuum inside is only $30. Most places want $50 for a synthetic oil change. If you do it yourself you may be able to get away with $25 or so depending on the filter you use.

Oh yeah...the lifetime tire rotation/balance is a good deal there too. I even brought the car in with new tires well after I got it and they didn't question them. Pretty much a no brainer maintainance item....I wouldn't trust them with anything complicated.

Not sure who you are asking, but I'll answer anyway...

Synthetic, yes.

I change the oil every 3-6K miles, depending when I have time to get it done. Some people are driving even 10K with synthetic oil, but I don't personally want to let it go that long.

Extra few bucks is not a biggie.

10k on synthetic?!? That's stretching it!!!

Under 5k is not unreasonable though.
