Is it normal, while braking, for the wheels to majorly turn left or right?

Hey guys,

Lately I've been noticing that under braking situations, my car has been acting alittle strange. It isnt consistant, and doesnt -always- have these symptoms - sometimes it works just fine!

Background: 2002 SS, M6, 7k Miles.

1) If I'm driving anywhere from 60-80mph, and I need to brake say down to 40, sometimes as I brake the steering wheel jitters left and right a bit, the same way that it would if your tires were misaligned and you were just cruising at highway speeds. When I stop braking, it goes back to normal. No sounds, just the wheel jittering.

2) If I'm driving say around 30mph, and brake to stop at a stop light, one out of four times, the wheel fights the car in a certain direction. It either spins the wheel right really far (most of the time) enough that if I let it I would be in the other lane - and I have to fight the wheel to stay straight, or just the other day it started doing it to the left. I've paid attention to ground conditions, I wasnt on any major slope or anything. And it doesnt seem to want to do it twice at the same place!

Are either of these normal, for RWD cars? I've only driven FWD, except for this car, and I -have- noticed that the ground does move the front wheels/steering wheel alot more than in any FWD car I've driven - and I'm sure thats due to the front wheels not spinning, and only moving due to the rear wheels.

But are these normal, or do they indicate a major brake problem?

Maybe something wrong with the ABS. Take it in to the dealer for warranty to check it out. Maybe wheel alignment off will cause the car to track more to road grooves. Tire pressure too low will hurt too. Tell them all the symptoms. Maybe time to rotate the tires too. I just did mine at 5200 miles. Later>>>>>>>>>

Your rotors are warped---you need to have them resurfaced or it would be better to get some good aftermarket rotor to permanatilly fix the problem because the stock ones will warp again very quicklly.

You can get them to fix it under warranty, as it's not a wear issue, but you may have to talk to the right people and act like you know what you're talking about. I got 4 new rotors at 12K due to them being to warped to resurface.

Most likely two problems. Good advice about the rotors, that's the common cause of the first problem you address.

For the pulling on a low speed stop, it freaked me out for a couple of weeks until I realized it was always doing it on the same roads. Sure enuf, it was huge tires vs. uneven surface. Guess I spent too much time in old man cars before I got back to the speed

I've noticed the exact same thing on mine. I think it's mostly because of those wide 275 tires on the front.

I believe the reason Corvettes have a skinnier tire on front is for this reason, plus it's easier to control and takes less steering effort.

Whatever it is, it doesn't sound normal. You're still under warranty, aren't you? Take it in, ride with the mechanic and make them fix it under the warranty if it's not normal. Nathan 1234 is also right, same thing happened to me on my '94 Z as what he's describing.

I dont have that problem on my z28, but I every once in a while if I brake a medium amount-to a hard amount, the car will want to shoot to either the left or the right (I cant remember).. I think i wants to shoot left though.. anyone ever have this happen?? should I take it to the dealer?

(sorry to barge in on your post)

I'm not gm tech man. but the jitters can be the rotors more than likely being a ls1 car I have heard the rotors warp alot, and the pull to the left or right could be a sticky calipier( air in the line) or bad calipier. Hope that helps

I think it is related to the warped rotors. I talked to my mechanic at the speed shop that I use and he said "go on the highway and get up to 60mph and then just push the brake down ever so slightly, if you feel a pulse in the brake pedal, it is probably warped rotors".

I did what he said and have noticed this problem on my TA and it only has 1300 miles on it. I am going to put a good set of eradispeed rotors on the car when springtime comes around. I do not want to have to deal with the dealer and have this happen again and again with the crappy GM rotors.

I bought all these bolt-ons to make the car faster and now I have to buy more parts to make it stop. Go figure.
