Newbie looking for a new car
I am looking to replace a ragged out Mustang. I am currently looking at a 1999 SS Vert. It seems like a good price - $17000. Since I do not know much about 4th gen camaros (I used to own an '89), I was wondering if there was anything I should look for? Are there any problems common to this model camaro? Any advice, etc? Thanks in advance for your help.

Piston slap is fairly common in the 99's. Get it checked inspected. Chances are if it doesn't arleady have the problem with a quite a few miles on it, it won't ever. A warranty isn't a bad idea. The transmission and rear on an m6 will last forever if you don't abuse it and stick to street tires. I never have looked up prices on convertables, hardtop kinda guy, but I think you would be able to do a couple thousand dollars better if you look around some more.
Good luck! and Welcome to the board!

if you can swing the extra money, many on here report slightly more power in the '00 and up, maybe just the '01 and '02's, dont remember. other than that the ls1 f bodies are a solid all around car with its only weak point being the rear. if your going to keep it stock, that price sounds good depending on the miles. if you want to modify it, save up the mosley 12 bolt rear. your only ford enemy will be the new cobra's which a supercharger or turbo will solve.
Newbie,
I have an '01 Z28 Coupe A4 for sale. I am getting married and we need a 4-dr car or truck, so have to sell the Z28. It's black with black/charcoal cloth interior, tinted windows, FlowMaster muffler, K&N filter element, HyperTech PowerProgrammer III, stock chrome rims/tires, and a professionally upgraded sound system. $16k. If interested, E-mail me (by clicking on "profile" below) and I can send you some pix. Thanks!!!
Daryl
PS- I love my Camaro, but I love her more!... and once her daughter is off to college in about 5 years, "I'll be back"!

I like the SS Vert myself. But I'm more than a little bit biased.
You can do better, but you must be patient. Also, check all the extra parts they DO add up. Also, you could ask for some help from other boards. Right now I am seeing some used 2002 going much cheaper then I would like to see. But that happens at 2 years.
I just saw a 02 Anniversary SS convertible here in KC for $24,995 and that was the advertised price in the paper! Probably could even do better at a dealer since they hardly ever give more then black book wholesale.

I think $17,000 is right on the money. Car values usually lose 50% every 4 years. The SS was a $35,000 car when new. Try to talk him down. But If it's in nice shape ****** that baby up.
The sky was almost clear tonight on the way to work. Full moon...Stars...a few clouds. Gorgeous. Sure makes it worth the car payment. I can't imagine a car being this much fun for under $35,000 new. Power, rag top, looks good, rare. Sorry, I was just gonna comment on the price and got carried away again. I wish I could buy another one.

Sounds like a pretty good price if the miles are right. But like 2002Z28SSConv said if it's in nice shape ****** it up. I just bought a 2000 SS t-top from a dealer in Chicago for 17G's with 16,100 miles on the clock. The car was in good shape, had a few mods, so if you come across something you like get it.
When I was looking (last 3 weeks) 99 SS's were the most typical car I found and they were anywhere from 17 - 21G's with around 30,XXX miles on the clock. If it looks good and it checks out grab it.
