Newb crank bearing/brace question

Purchased an engine and want to check the main bearings/rods out before I put it in my project.

I know this is probably a stupid question but it's been bugging me and have to ask.

Is it ok to remove the main caps to check the bearings out then reinstall everything as it was? Talk about bearing crush/mating/etc has got me a little concerned about disturbing the setup.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't do it unless you have a reason to think something is wrong with it. I would never bust it open without tearing down.

Re: Newb crank bearing/brace question

Thanks for the reply. The valves weren't seating, had to pull the heads and am lapping the valves, didn't know if it'd cause harm to go further into it.

This is another stupid question. I haven't dealt with a cross bolt mains before. Can I pull the side bolts to paint the block? I don't want to disturb the mains, but need to clean the block and don't want to spray over the bolt heads.
