New respect for the corvette!

Also, no sense arguing if the Camaro is a sports car. I thought it was understood that it was a muscle car. The new GTO could be classified a sports car, but I think the Camaro is a bit too unrefined for sports-car class. However, that won't stop insurance companies from claiming it tho!
The fact that our f-bodies come out of the factory doing .87 on the skid pad proves that it handles way above average, you're talking about 15-20 cars in the world that handle better than the Z28, that's pretty good company.
I KNOW that bottom line, our 4th gens are not going to handle like a C5, that's fine by me.
One can always get the beefier suspension from Strano or LGMotorsports, or even Hotchkis and VIOLA(voila???), you got an f-body that does 1g on the skidpad, and THAT'S a great handling car.

Vettes are awesome. My c3's even handle decent. My old c4 was good handling but the o1 vette rocked. No in a straight line my 00 ss would take it. the vette was an auto and the SS a 6 speed with a few mods. As for handling the camaro SUCKS. Doesn't even compare to the vette. After having all these cars though I have to say my next is a viper. Never had one or road in one but I bet they are awesome handling machines!! I let ya knnow when I get one!!
People we are comparing a $30,000 car to a $50,000 car. That vette better do something better for 20 g's. We already know its not power cosidering the motors are exactly the same and it's definately not interior space. So in my opinon, the fbody is not a bad place to start, but for 20 grand more, independent rear suspension, no back seat, better weight distribution, and a lower center of gravity that vette BETTER handle a crap load better or I dont know why they hell anyone would buy them in the first place.

Having owned a 98 coupe and a 2000 z28. I can tell you that the two cars arent't really that far off. I had the f45 shocks start to go bad and the car felt very similar to the 25k mile Z28 with the "good" Decarbons. Really, the only place where the vette really outshines the C5 is on broken pavement/really bumpy roads. IRS is the clear winner here.
The vette has a lot better aerodynamics as well. 170 on the autobahn was rock solid. Not sure I can say that about the Camaro.
The value in the f body comes in the price. And really, that's the only reason I switched. Just about everything associated with Corvette is expensive. You get 80% of the performance for about 50% of the cost.
Whether you like one or the other depends on what you do with the car.
I loved my vette, but I also love the camaro for different reasons.....kinda like women.....

I'm sorry, but unless you live in a trailer park, there is no social standing that is improved by owning a Corvette
I have a Z06 and a Firebird. I love them both, for different reasons. The Z06 is a nimble, lightweight car with an incredible motor, brakes and suspension. My bone stock Z06 laid down 363rwhp/352rwtq (dyno graph).
I've owned my Firebird since '96. I started out using it for everything (drag, cruising, autox), then focused on drag racing with suspension and power mods to that end.
On a road course, it's tough to beat a Z06 (taking the driver out of the equation). It's one of the few cars that have dipped below 8 minutes at the 'Ring and it's a performance benchmark for many manufacturers.
I like F and Y bodies, just for different reasons. People who dis' either don't know what they're talking about.

Around here, the Vette croud thinks they are skys above anyone else. They are also older people with gray hair, and they attend car shows together... all showing off the same automatic coupe.

And those are the people I wish to impress, really. Lets be serious any real car person will give a Firebird or Camaro the same amout of respect, if not they are just being naive. I would sit here and tell you about how I would spend 20 grand less on the car and put the money into mods but we are not arguing that the fbody is a better value for what you get. Because we know that that argument has taken place about 1 billion times now.So once again this is just my opinion but Chevy has kept the vette going for 50 years now. Obviously it is selling pretty well and people must feel that the 50 grand is justified some how. It is a great car, would I want to drive it every day? Probably not, I love my care I feel it looks a crap load better then the vette also. Is the 20 grand worth the improvements over the fbody? Im assuming people feel it is because the fbody is gone and the vette is still here. But my feelings are once again that they are both great cars but for 20 grand extra I think I would expect a little bit more then what you get. However I would still drive either and fbody or a vette over a mustang or a ricer.

Thats a pretty common misconception about the f-bod's being a 1 trick pony... F-bod's are pretty good at hustling around cones and turns.. might not be the most eligant or feel the nicest, but when it comes down to raw times, it'll bring in the low times.
If you look in SCCA nat autox times in F-stock, they hold their own quite well against other groups.
If you look in SCCA T2 Roadracing, f-bod's do pretty well beating out M3's and S2000's.. and thats with a restrictor on the LS1's. Gee, I thought those cars are god's gift for the roadcourse?
The F-bod's, especially for their weight are pretty good.. Double A arm coil overs up front, and 3 link LCA, panhard, tq arm out back. Powerful and relatively light engine set pretty far back, and the ability to fit wide tires on.
Go in the Mustang forums and what do you hear them doing? Aftermarket conversions to double a arm coil overs up front, and a 3 link out back.. move the engine back, and finding ways to clear wider tires. Sound familiar? Doesn't stop the Mustang owners from trying.. and doesn't stop them in being competative either.. But for some reason, the f-bod crowd just doesn't want to do turns.. Hence why you it seems like there are more Mustangs out there than f-bod's turning sometimes..
That all said, a Corvette is just even better and easier to drive than a Camaro will ever be.

I did the gm thing in august and had a great time. first my cousin and I were instructed to go 60 in first gear in the h2. (then watched our instructor get fired. ) My whole family got to drive a z06. my father got a cool instructor that made him go "faster, Faster". I got some a$$hole that pulled the e-brake on me for trying a top speed run in second gear... I slid out and hit a cone. It was worth it considering the entire day didn't cost a dime.
I found a picure of it
