Smile new car and some ?'s

I just bought a 2001 Black TA M6 last week with 20,000 miles I want to know what are some things to look for as far as problems for this year, hints and tips for maintenace up-keep. Also I'm new to driving the manual so when racing give me some tips such as which gears to use, etc. Also what kind of gas mileage should I be getting driving hard/normal. Enlighten me.

Gas mileage varies greatly, i get get around 230-240 per tank (i drive it like i stole it) some people get over 300. If your looking for gas mileage 5th gear in the city and 6th on the freeway would be the idea, if you speed 6th in the city is possible but not pleasent. As far as launching it just takes practice, i've had my car 2 years and i'm not very good at it, but i don't really care all that much either. For maint, wax, wax, wax, wax your car is black and will never stay clean.

thanks for the reply I still wanna know performance wise how to drive this thing to its full potential. Give me some pointers for shifting, what gears to use, etc. I know there are some free mods, give me some that are pretty easy for a newbie. I want to know everyhting there is on this car since i just got it. Whatever anyone's got whether it be a tip, maintenance stuff, performance stuff, etc. give it to me, I'm all ears

Hit the little "search" button and type in the words "free mods" in the LS1 Tech and you'll come up with lots of stuff.

LS1info.com has a bunch of tech related articles, info, sound clips, videos etc.

As far as first bolt-on's go, there are plenty of things to do: lid, filter, CAI, ram air, catback, headers, gears, stall, heads, cam, nitrous, S/C, suspension mods etc. etc.

What to do first depends totally on what are your goals with your car. Straight line performance? Performance in the twisties? Both? Something else? AND your budget, of course.

Congrats on the purchase, BTW!

Thank you so much for the reply, you seem pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. I'm looking for straight line performance right now and on a budget. I'm thinking a few free mods and a lid/exhaust would be a good start. As far as racing this car, I guess I will just have to keep practicing and getting used to it. MY first time really getting on it resulted in 1-2-3 hard chirps hauling some butt But I know there is so much room for improvement, just looking for some advice. Thanks again

A cheap mod that you might wanna think about is a !CAGS skip-shift eliminator. When I first got my M6, I loved it. But, having it lock out 2nd & 3rd gears started to **** me off. Ebay usually has some for sale...just search for "CAGS" (computer aided gear selector) and it should bring some up. Either that, or you can get a new one from www.ls1motorsports.com for $30. Hope this helps...

I think the skip shift thing is pretty cool, it directs the stick straight into 4th, less wear on the clutch and less work, my only beef with it is they put the light at the bottom of the dash so you can't really see it.

Nope, no WS6.......but it has everything else. THese cars really haul ****! I'm amazed how the power band is so long but yet smooth, its hard to tell how fast your going! I just can't stop washing this car, black is such a pain but looks oh so nasty Thanks for all the feedback, I'm so interested in learning as much as I can. Name the top 3 free mods that were actually worth your time. I've checked out installuniversity.com and there is a lot of options.

Haul ****? You bet your **** they do!!!

But I still do miss that low end torque the LT1 has straight out of the box!!!

Top three mods? Since you are looking for straight line performance, I'd say better flowing intake and exhaust as well as gears would be my suggestions.

In the long run you should also pay attention to suspension components, too.

I guess that is a bit more than three, but that's a start anyway...

Have fun!

My first three stop light to stop light races have been awesome: a newer Cobra with a mild exhaust, my friends 3000 GT VR4 and an older fox body 5.0 : the result: I love this damn thing. Its so damn fast that even with a lil rookie driving allows for some room for error and still walk the dog on these cars. The biggest problem i've found so far is that I don't have enough time outside of my job to drive the thing enough.
