Need some help in picking a camshaft, any ideas will be helpful.
I want to do a camshaft on my 2002 a4 z28. Has pulley, intake, exhaust only and I'm now planning on keeping the stock 1700 stall but still doing 3.42s. Its my daily driver so I would like a smooth idle but still have a slight exhaust note that you can hear it at idle. 40rwhp @ 6000rpm would be fine and wouldn't want a power dip from 4500-6000. Not really looking for more than 40whp out of the cam. Would have to pass emissinos and not drop gas milage by more than 1-2mpg. Any ideas. I was looking at a TR224 or something. Rev limiter won't be set over 6k. Thanks for looking.
you don't ask for much do ya....
you DO realize that the factory rev limiter is higher than 6000rpm ....right?
224 cam is about as big as you're gonna go and pass emissions...but you won't see 40hp out of it.
only way i can see for you to make your goal...is small cam and some cleaned up heads.

I was counting the tune and camshaft for 40rwhp If that seems reasonable. Would the tr224 make any different tone at idle or its still too small? Any other recomended cams similar to tr224 that are better IYO?
I don't see why a TR224 wouldn't make 35-40rwhp in a car equipped with an LS6 intake and the usual bolt-ons - you do have headers right?
That cam is about as big as you can go on a stock converter, 3.42 gears, and meet the rest of your requirements (limitations
).
Good thing about that cam is you won't lose a bit of low end torque. One of the very few "small" cams that improves low end torque and still retains the higher RPM potential. It will sound slightly more aggressive than stock, you'll know its cammed (even on a 114LSA), but no real noticable lope.
I don't think anyone has ever been disappointed with that cam, it works very well.

Why can't I edit my posts, I get logged out. Anyways I don't have headers. I didn't see the need for 500 bucks a pain in the *** job and 8hp. Would the cam still breath good without them?
You absolutely need headers with 95% of aftermarket cams. Try the CheaTR from Thunder Racing... that's the only cam that I know of that makes very good power on stock manifolds.
Like I always say: It's pointless to build up an NA motor if you need to meet strict emissions standards.
Add a power-adder and call it a day.

Well this sucks, I get another plan and then the header problem comes up. You know what I should do, sell this and get a used ls2 vette for under 30k. This tuning stuff gets very annoying sometimes. What would a cheaTR cam do for me. 1-2 hp??? @#$%^&* EPA
Here ya go.. Vid and cam info.. THat Idle actually sounds really good for a 220/581 cam!! Supposed to be somewhat emissions friendly too.

So that 220 cam from texasspeed is good through the stock headers? I'd go with the 114lsa but whats it mean about special tuning for automatics required, are they just talking about a dyno tune? 30-35rwhp feasiable through my headers? Thanks.
The cheaTR cam looks like a rediculous ramp rate. .215 and .629lift I like this texas speed one better.
