Angry Need help - Power steering died

Today it rained for the first time in about a month or two so I decide to take to car out to do some doughnuts.

I had been turning the car around for a couple of minutes when all the sudden the power steering just completely died. I didn't hit anything.

Upon inspection, the belt is fine, the pully turns and I haven't lost one drop of PS fluid.
I am stumped. I've never heard of this happening. I was expecting to find the belt loose or something

Maybe you got water on the belt and it's slipping?

Donuts will put a early end to LS1 Power Steering Pumps.I know this from expereinceI killed 2.My taught is the fluid heats up faster and builds up pressure which in the end kills your pump. You wear out the bearings inside. The Cure to this problem is for you to get a Power Steering Cooler of a SS or Ws6.I bought a used Ls1 one of ebay.I put it on No more Problems.Dont you hate that annoying whine.....I know I did.Hope that helps out bud.

His car is a SS. Maybe he needs two power steering coolers.

Sustained high RPMs will kill a PS pump with stock fluid.

The rack only needs 3 gpm to operate and the pump supplies 12 gpm. The higher the rpm the more the pump recirculates the fluid. This causes more and more heat to build.

Finally, the pump goes or a seal blows.

Turn One Industries makes replacement pumps that are built to take the heat and abuse. They are specifically designed for use in ASA cars. The gpm to the rack is reduced to 6gpm, thus reducing heat build up.

Lingenfelter resells them, at a significant mark up.

I bought mine directly from Turn One for ~$150 delivered.

Thanks for the help. The belt wasn't slipping at all and I didn't hear any whinning noise.

Does anyone have that Lingenfelter pump? I wonder if it makes a difference in steering feel when driving down the road.

Sorry ... I was quoted $150 delivered for a new GM pump.

The Turn One pump is $185 plus shipping.
The billett pulley was another $50. It comes installed and safety wired.

Sorry about the mix up.

No website that I've found.

UPDATE: I got my power steering fixed.

It was the pump. The shaft that the pully turns had sheered in half!
I don't know how it managed to do that, it's a sizeable chunk of metal.

Thanks mitchntx. I ordered the high performance pump from Turn One and it's now installed.
It took me half an hour to remove the pump and about 5 hours of agonizing frustration putting it back on.
First, I had my buddy who works @ Land Rover install the pulley onto the new pump. When I about to get started, I realized there's two bolts that have to go behind it before the pully is put on. So I finally found a shop that would remove the pully and was still open (I didn't want to wait another day).

Many a time I had the thing partly or even all put back together and find out there's something I forgot or didn't do first and have to take it all off again.

Maybe now with the high performance pump, I can do as many doughnuts and I please without something breaking.

Good info! I think mine started whining this weekend. But it could be the 100+ degree weather.
