My dad is finally getting an fbody...need help!
Well, since I got a full ride to college, my dad has some extra cash and wants to get an ls1 fbody. What should we look for when looking at the ls1's? If he gets a 2000 or newer, I know I'm going to look for an ls6 block since 25% of them got that. Or is that even worth looking for? He wants it to be quicker than mine but also emissions legal because he doesn't want a $10k emissions ticket. He's leaning towards a turbo kit like from quartermile performance but he's open to any options as long as it can take me :-). Gotta love that father / son competition stuff. I think he's just joking though. He just wants it to be in good condition and fast but still drivable year round. Thanks guys...
Sure it might be worth looking for the block, but will you find one and how long is it going to take is another question.
To me something like that wouldn't be a priority at all. To me it would a low mile stock car. Maybe on 01+ since that already has the LS6 intake.
Also, I don't think you necessarily need any turbo kits to get an LS1 to the low 12's. Bolt-ons, heads, cam, gears, stall (on auto) etc. will do it just fine.

Yeah to get a full-weight ls1 to the 11's isn't too hard. Heads/cam and the normal bolt-ons and you should be set. My car will see mid to high 11's so that's what he's shooting for at the moment but my car has a 3350# raceweight at the moment (til cage goes in). I think he wants the turbo for the coolness effect plus they are aren't as hard on the bottom end as the other power adders. I think his ideal car would be a low 11 / high 10 second daily driver, but with a budget of 20 grand, is that really possible (say with a 98 or something?).

I dunno...the new turbo kit from quartermile performance (formally ls1speed) is awfully tempting. 11.44 @ 125 @ only 7psi. At 9psi, guy made like 500+ at the wheels and over 600 lb. ft. of torque. I think we're going to look for a nice low mileage 98z and go ahead w/ the turbo route. Figure 12 for the car, 6 for the kit, and 2 grand for odds and ends that will be needed like converter, sfc's, lca's, etc.

Going out we have a Bassani off-road y-pipe into a loudmouth with a Dynomax bullet replacing the resonator.
Everything else between is stock!!!!
A few free LS1 mods, QA1 suspension, and some home boxed LCAs with relocators.
The power goes thru a Yank ST3800 converter into a TransGo equiped 4L60e turning a 10 bolt with an Eaton H/D posi and ET streets on the end.
The other stuff is subframe connectors, home made g-load brace and drive shaft loop, and the usual poly bushings.
I've been running 12.4-5 all summer with the spare and jack in place with a full tank of gas.

Yeah I think I'll look for a strong running one first. I actually kinda like the idea of going low 12's w/ only a few bolt-ons. I bet with headers, catback, converter, lid and a few suspension mods we could get it darn close to the 11's w/ good tires of course. LS1's are just flat-out amazing. You're trapping 111 w/ intake and exhaust (and not even headers). That is amazing!
