I have a 2002 Z28. The red GM DexCool starts to stink real bad when I use the car. After about a half hour that **** smells like a rotten egg. I recently changed it, because of that same reason, but then the smell started again. Why is this? I really need some help with this. Is there something I can add to the coolant to stop the smell (tablets)?

 

Rotten egg = bad catalytic converter.

If you are smelling your coolant, you shouldn't be. The system should be closed and you would smell nothing. You have a leak, fix it.

 

It's most likely the catalytic converters, I had the same problem.

If your car has <80K miles, the replacement is free of charge at a GM dealership.

 

I dont understand how a catalitic converter can affect the smell of my antifreeze. I am going to put in some lt headers and ory on monday, will that fix the problem?

 

did someone use the "egg white" trick to seal a small leak in your radiator at one point, and forget to seperate the yolk from the white? lol. seriously though, your problem sounds like its the cats, id get them replaced.

 

Can someone please inform me how something from the exhaust system (cats) can make something from the cooling system (radiator) smell? It just doesnt make sense to me. But then again, I dont know that much about cars.

 

In what manner are you smelling your coolant? Are you smelling an odor inside the car while driving, coming from the tailpipe, or in the engine bay? If it's inside the car, it might be your cooling/heater system. If it's from the tailpipe, see above comments from others re: cats. If you're opening up your coolant reservoir and sniffing the coolant, well then, you're just wierd.

When Im driving I can smell that "fart" smell, and I know it wasnt me. Also after I get some place and park, then walk towards the front of the car, I can smell it. Not out of my exhaust pipes, I dont think.

 

Your water pump may be leaking.

When your car is not running, go underneath it and see if there's any DexCool seeping out of the water pump and gelled over under the engine.

If you see this, your water pump probably has a leak and needs to be replaced, and that's why you're smelling DexCool.

 

I'm going to check my water pump, that just might be it. Thanks for the help guys.

 

Maybe you have a dead animal stuck under your car.......You never know.

 

I guess I'll find out on Monday if there is a dead animal, when I install my Hooker LTs, ORY and GMMG. I'll also check for a leak (haven't noticed one yet).

 

Good luck with the install of the lts and ory, I noticed you are in Cali, good luck passing smog. I have a feeling it the rotten egg smell is the cats (another way, since I noticed that no one has mentioned) is run the car at night when it is at normal opertating temp and look under the car. If you see either one or both Cats as red hot, then there is your answer about a clogged cat. When you install the LTs and ORY, you will definitely find out if your cats were clogged. I would love to get a set of LTs for my gto but with smog laws here, there would be no way I could get away with them, especially when I have to have my car smogged. I have never experienced rotten egg smell when a water pump went out but I have not had the experience with Dex Cool on either my Camaro I had or my gto.

My friends Rx-7 had a similar smell a few weeks ago and we put the car on the lift and there was animal carcass all over his downpipe, it was a messy afternoon but the fart smell went away good luck
