A mod that I might not know I have...?

how would I know if my car has a cam or not? I have only done visual comparisons with other cars.

Is the only way to tell by taking to a dyno shop or ripping my motor apart?

Well if you don't have any aftermarket headers, I doubt you're cammed.

put it on a dyno

you can also check your valve springs. you change em when you get a cam

or if your car lopes at idle. but if your car doesn't have headers or springs it doesn't have a cam.

If it doesn't have headers, then it doesn't have a cam?! Hate to break it to ya guys, but they don't HAVE TO go hand-in-hand. Fine, the majority of guys would likely do headers as well, but you can't say the car doesn't have a cam if it doesn't have headers!!!

How to tell for sure? Well, the springs really should have been changed if the cam was changed (but that means pulling off the valve covers to check). If you've got the valve covers off though, and you got the means to check (using a micrometer or something? ) turn the motor over and measure the valve lift...............if it's over .500", the motor is cammed.

Other than that, does the engine look like it's been apart? Does it sound any different (cut-out closed) than other LS1's around? Is it much faster than other LS1's? If you answer NO to any of those (oh, and if you don't have headers!) then your engine likely isn't cammed.

Cammed?

I don't want to steal a post or anything. Just have a question close to the topic. I was told By the place I bought my 98 camaro z28 that it was cammed. I bought it at carmax with the warranty, and carmax is supposed to change everything back to stock and make it like new. But they told me they left the flowmaster cat back, slp cold air lid, bellows, and cam because they were all upgrades to the original car. I was also told they had to remove alot of things, and change it all back to the way they sold it to me, Pretty much stock. The only upgrade Ihad done for the last year up untill recently was taking off my 117 speed limiter. The idle is a lil rougher then friends z28's,but i've been told by many of people that it sounds totally stock other then the cat back. Carmax said the owner called it a stealth cam and I've heard a lil about it but not much. So now I'm asking if I really do have a cammed camaro? But I really don't wanna pull the valve covers. The reason I still believe it may be cammed Is whenever im racing a ls1 trans am a4 with a lid I usually pull a good length away from them to just have bellows and a cat back. Or am I just another fairly stock camaro I have run with no traction at the track my car is an a4 and has run a best of 12.8 in the quarter. Transmission is burning its clutch discs I've been told it needs rebuilt.

Sorry for such a long post I just want to give you all the facts that I can think of that might help you answer my question of does it sound cammed or not.

P.S. I know no one condones roll racing but a friend of mine runs a 12.6 in the quarter with his 94 supra twin turbo. And after we left the track he rolled up and wanted to go from 80 so we went ahead and went on his go he got the hit I with a passenger proceeded to pull a car length on him till we shut down at 115.

This is not bragging but how did this type of thing happen? he went faster in the quarter, trapped at a higher mph then me and I had an additional 200 pounds of fat boy.

Pete was on target. A real auto mechanic can pull a valve cover and use a simple dial indicator to establish the lift and duration of your intake and exhaust. Compare it to stock and there is your answer. I would not expect a dealer to want to check this for you. A speed and performance shop would be your best bet.

slowz28girl, try these contacts in your local area. They are all good folks, but have slightly different agendas. One, or all may info or help that you can use.

Good Luck,

That's just a good way to assume. Usually guys aren't gonna go take the time to put in a cam and not even do headers.

Well I'm not a big retard, just a poor college kid, but I will be doing a cam this week in my car and will not have headers going in at the same time. Sure I won't get the full benefit of the cam, but I can't afford them for another month or so
