Re: Mobil 1 and piston slap??

when i start my car on a cold morrning, the piston slap is VERY loud. I don't know if it is because i use syn oil or not. Once the car warms up it is fine again.

Re: Mobil 1 and piston slap??

synthetic oils tend to be a bit thinner, this could possibly contribute to piston slap I suppose.

I run the same Mobil 1 5w-30 full synth in all 3 gen III motors we have. Two slap when cold, one doesn't. None of them use any oil.

I live in a warm climate (Southern California) and had a problem with piston slap when using Mobil 1 10W/30. I changed to Royal Purple 10W/30 and the piston slap (at first) was more subdued (sp), now 6K miles later, my piston slap is completly gone.

Re: Mobil 1 and piston slap??

I didn't seem to notice a difference going from 10w30 Valvoline to 0W40 Mobil1 on my car. The colder it is, the louder the slap will be on cold start. I've heard of Amsoil quieting down piston slap in 4.6 Fords though.

Re: Mobil 1 and piston slap??

turn the key to the on or run position and hold the trip set down till the change oil light flashes (where is your owners manual!)

the 30wt. M1s are thinner than other brands 30wts. this is not a synthetic thing but rather a M1 thing. Try the 0w-40 if you insist on M1.

Re: Mobil 1 and piston slap??

I have always used M1 and always had piston slap so I can't say if it causes PS. I usually get the 5qt jug of M1 10w-30 and a qt of 15w-50 and pour in the 5qts of 10-30 in and 1/2qt of the 15-50 because it uses a little oil, so I use a little of the 15-50b to help a little
