Mobil 1 gear lubricant
i used the mobil 1 75W90 synthetic. i changed mine at 62K miles, fluid still looked ok, however, no hard driving. never even been to the track. i found minimal metal shavings on the magnet.
as far as the limited slip additive, i was told on this site that i didn't need to add it with the torsen axle. but i used it anyway, just to be safe, and cos the owners manual said to use it...

It depends which rearend you have, do you have an Auburn or Zexel Torsen? If you have the Auburn unit DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF SYNTHETIC LUBRICANT, if you have the Zexel, you can use synthetic, either way I would leave it in for only 30,000 miles.

I am not an authority on this, however I would guess in that model year you have the Auburn unit. You should find out definetly which one you have before using sythetic lubricant.
I have a 2001 Z28 (Not SS) and I use 85W-140 DINO oil with the GM additive.

i believe 99 and newer got the torsen, except some SS's got the auburn. can anyone confirm this?
also, if you have the '00 camaro booklet from GM, the one they have in the racks in the showroom, this book will tell you what kind of rear end it had in '00 on the options page.

When the Z28 is shipped to SLP for the SS modification (WU8 I believe), the rearend limited slip unit is changed there by SLP. You would have to contact them to find out what units were installed for that year, case in point my 2001 Z28 has the Zexel-Torson limited slip (G80), if I ordered the SS option, for that year (2001) SLP would have installed the Auburn unit as the SS upgrade.

99 and up (except optional SLP posis) have the Torsen torque biasing posi and the owners manual calls for synthetic 75-90 with no specified change interval.

There have been numerous posts over at LS!.com "General Help", about the Auburn unit sliping and burning up using sythetic oil. You can do a search to come up with the threads.
I have no first hand experience with this unit, my comments were addressing what I have read about them.

I think that we need to differentiate between the regular Auburn (clutch type), HD Auburn (clutch type), and Auburn Pro (cone type).
As far as I know the first 2 work well with synthetics and the last one does not.
