missed 4th gear

i was at the track about 2 months ago and just as i was crossing the finsih line i hit the rev limiter in 3rd gear and as i took the car out of gear the tranny SUCKED the shifter into 2ND!!!!! after that i took the car for another run to see if it affected the performance and it did it again!!! the car runs just fine now and it doesnt do it anymore because i put in a b&m shifter. Do u guys think i bent any pushrods? the car is still under warranty so do u think i should take it in? (98 Z28 m6)

Depends. You probably bent several push rods. I did the dreaded 3rd to 2nd mis-shift at 6000rpm; not good I bent 12 push rods, but I had them replaced with some hardened units. Get them checked or check them yourself. It is difficult to tell if you bent them with just the ear. I was not sure unitl we opened her up.

How do you know if you bent your rods?

Also, how would a dealer treat this? I hope not to ever full throttle downshift, and tweak my technique so I dont, but what are audiable and noticible signs of this?

...and i really like the way a 5.slow owner is on this board giving advice about a car he doesn't even own!! Guess you can't learn alot about them if all you see is the taillights...

Hehehe, sounds like YOU suck not the tranny! (Just a jab from an A4 owner who thinks autos are better!)Anyway, how mechanically inclined are you?You can pull off your valve covers and check the pushrods yourself.Just pull them out ONE AT A TIME (don't get them mixed up) and roll them on a flat surface to see if they are bent.A mechanic may charge you out the hiney to check them.Good luck.

i often wonder what would've happened if i'd had an m6...would i have done a mis-shift?
once i revved my engine in N at a stoplite and then shifted into D while the engine was still spooled!!! not too bright, heard/felt a loud KA-CHUNK !!!

then drove away w/ my tail between my legs and wept.

Well, if you had an M6, and you missed a shift downward, you'd probably be the one starting this post!!

To this day, I still do not understand how you people manage to go from 3rd to 2nd like that. *knock on wood*.

Well, most shift ***** arent straight up and down, they are facing the driver on the bottom...

The only 3-2 misshifts I've encountered were people not actually shifting down, but down towards themselves, that way. Y'know?

I just try to make it a habit to shift more to the right, so that if I do miss, I'll miss and go into 6th.

.....umm...don't forget that you bend those pushrods ON something. They don't just bend for no reason.

My Auto owns!

WOW, you came up with that on your own? Please, oh please, tell me what it is I could bend my pushrods on, so that I may rid my engine of the offending piece(s)!!!!
