Misfire Help

So my car has a small misfire. I dont know if its logged any codes for this b/c I have an ses light due to no egr etc. The plugs and wires only have about 600 miles on them and it only seems to mis at lower rpms. Above 3k it seems ok. Where should I start trying to track this down? Could it be a bad coil pack?

Assuming you have the 99 mentioned in your screen name, you need to scan it. An OBD-II code scanner costs you less the $50 at Harbor Freight. That's the problem with running with the SES light on, and not programming the known codes out of the PCM. You can't see when "real" codes pop up.

I did have the codes pulled recently, about a week ago at Autozone, only thing that came up were the usual egr, and 420/430 codes but no misfire codes. Thing is if i put my hand at the tail pipe I can feel several exhaust pulses that are cold. Could it be an injector? I seafoamed the tank recently but I'm sure it was doing this before.

The car is the 99 mentioned in my screen name. I also checked the header bolts and they're all tight. Would buying a scanner still help me out here?

Is there anyway that I can test the coil packs at home?

So I had the codes pulled again and the only one there is for the egr valve I don't have. Really starting to wonder if this is a misfire at all. Seems to do this more between 2000-2500 rpm, and more so when the engine is hot than cold. Could this be injector issues?

There's a LOT more to OBD-II systems than the DTCs that AutoZone informs you of. PCMs can detect misfires and not trigger a DTC or the SES light. Find a qualified tech with a real scanner and check the misfire history.

The P0420 and P0430 DTCs are set due to inefficient or missing catalytic converters. Sometimes they can clog and cause all kinds of problems.
